Mission Statement
Founded in 1988, GSSM is a two-year, public, statewide, residential high school in Hartsville, SC, specializing in the advanced study of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). Since its inception, GSSM has graduated more than 1,500 alumni from across the state. Many are now leaders in engineering, medicine, education, law, science, technology and business. Our residential program serves 259 high school juniors and seniors a year, with plans to grow to 300 by fall 2015. Focused studies in science, math and technology, plus economics and engineering, prepare graduates for 21st-century professions. GSSM’s Outreach and Virtual programs deliver exceptional STEM education and professional development programs to more than 10,000 students and teachers across the state each year. GSSM is an educational resource that serves the state of South Carolina as a model for academic excellence and provides a diverse range of programs and partnerships.
About This Cause
The mission of the South Carolina Governor’s School for Science and Mathematics (GSSM) is to develop the scientifically astute and ethically aware leaders needed for our state’s expanding knowledge-based economy. The GSSM Foundation’s mission is to support the Governor’s School by giving voice to its needs, providing supplemental funds to augment its programs and informing the public as to its accomplishments and contributions to the quality of life and economic prosperity of South Carolina.
