Mission Statement
The mission of Space One Eleven is to provide paid professional opportunities and advocacy for artists to exhibit and teach, create a forum for public understanding of contemporary art, and offer arts education to area youth and adults.
About This Cause
Space One Eleven was founded in 1986 and received its 501(c) (3) non-profit status in 1988, under the leadership of founding artists Anne Arrasmith and Peter Prinz. Arrasmith retired as Founding Director in 2015 and Prinz continues to lead the organization as CEO and Co-Founder. Artists from Birmingham and the surrounding areas have traditionally been isolated from major cultural arts centers in the U.S. and have access to far fewer resources. Space One Eleven was established as a response to this isolation and has since become a nationally recognized visual art organization. Space One Eleven is a member of the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts Initiative and a member of the National Performance Network. Space One Eleven has also gained national recognition for its art education programs. During his tenure as Director of the National Endowment for the Arts, Bill Ivey declared before the U.S. House of Representatives: “At Space One Eleven, children have a safe place to go, and an opportunity to engage in the creative process.” In “A History of the NEA,” published in 2008, Space One Eleven is cited as one of those “providers that offer their constituents materials, programs, and services that would otherwise be unavailable in an urban center.” (p. 212) The building of a stronger community is carried out through the use of two, overlapping programs: Visual Arts Exhibitions and Arts Education. The programs are symbiotic due to exhibiting artists often working with the children in the arts education program. The Exhibitions Program provides artists an opportunity to experiment and create provocative new work that they would otherwise be unable to execute given the constraints of a commercial gallery or a traditional museum setting. The exhibitions in Space One Eleven’s galleries and the window installations showcase artists of local, regional, and national prominence thereby providing an opportunity to see and experience all types of cutting edge contemporary art. The galleries are programmed with thematic exhibitions that address contemporary issues. All exhibitions are accompanies by artist talks and panel discussions, to create a dialog and opportunity to exchange views. The Arts Education Program unites emerging and professional artists with youth and adults from the Birmingham area in a variety of programs to impart artistic skills, encourage creativity and promote an understanding and appreciation of art. City Center Art teaches young artists in grades 2 through 8 the elements of art and principles of design through individually conceived projects and student collaborations. While keeping with state arts education guidelines, Space One Eleven’s philosophy is to facilitate the needs of young artists on a concept by concept basis, providing an environment in which young artists can learn, create, explore, and forge their own path into the world of art. Alabama Charcoal is Space One Eleven’s rigorous studio art program for high school students of all skill levels. The program is designed to build visual communication skills and foster creative thinking. Students learn and strengthen foundation skills, create individually conceived projects, go on field trips, learn about art-related careers, and work with a mentor to advance writing abilities. Juniors and seniors receive guidance for college applications and essays while building visual arts portfolios to increase college opportunities. Students participating in these programs come from throughout the metropolitan area, but Space One Eleven focuses its recruiting efforts on students from under resourced neighborhoods and schools and provides free and reduced tuition for qualifying families. Space One Eleven offers free art education to public schools in need of visual art classes. Space One Eleven provides an artist to teach quality art classes in the school and works with the school to bring students to the after school art programs at Space One Eleven. Art in the Making offers opportunities for adults aged 55 and better to participate in art workshops taught by professional artist teachers in a variety of art disciplines. Art in the Making is designed to enhance the quality of life for older adults through skill-based learning that brings joy, connection, improved health and well-being. The program serves participants who have no experience in the arts, as well as adults who have past experience but enjoy enhancing their skills in a social environment. Workshops are offered in Space One Eleven’s studios and senior living communities, and culminate with public art exhibitions. Participants are offered free or reduced tuition rates, based on financial need. ARTfix! is a collection of fee-based art programs offered to the public. Classes offered are figure drawing, ceramics, painting, open critique, and art history.
