Mission Statement
It is our mission to rescue surplus food and redistribute it free of charge to our partner agencies to reduce hunger in Greenville County, SC. Our vision is to eliminate food insecurity in Greenville County by ensuring no good food goes to waste.
About This Cause
Loaves & Fishes was founded in Greenville in 1991 after local banker Sam Hunt read about City Harvest, a food rescue organization in New York City. Recognizing a similar need and opportunity in his own community, he founded Loaves & Fishes. In that first year, we rescued a modest 25,000 pounds of food. Almost thirty years later, Loaves & Fishes rescues and delivers over 2 million pounds of food to our 111 partner agencies in Greenville County annually. We deliver rescued food to our partner agencies free of charge so they may use their limited resources to support their own vital missions. Loaves & Fishes is the only organization in our community that provides regularly scheduled deliveries of perishable food for distribution to individuals served at emergency food pantries, soup kitchens, afterschool programs and more. Our agencies include: • Single meal providers, such as soup kitchens and breakfast programs • Nonprofit childcare and after school/summer programs • Shelters and group homes • Senior programs • Community centers • Low income housing for seniors and disabled citizens • Therapeutic programs supporting special populations • Culinary programs for unemployed and underemployed people
