About This Cause

Greenville Technical Charter High School (GTCHS) has been turning some heads lately as people look at the results of the dynamic programs they have developed and the curriculum they have implemented. Through the structured and disciplined approach to teaching Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math (STEAM), Greenville Technical Charter High School students collectively scored the 2nd best ACT Test Scores (after the Governors’ School of Arts). They came in number four in the State of South Carolina for ACT Scores. Greenville Technical Charter High School had the highest graduation rates in the Greenville County in three of the last four years, and they were in the top three all four years, averaging 99%. Last year’s graduating class won over $6.5 million in scholarships, which is phenomenal, which translates into almost $65,000 per graduate. They achieved these high scores through a disciplined application of a rigorous curriculum. Greenville Technical Charter High School was the first charter school in SC to win the Blue Ribbon School Program National Award. In the Palmetto Gold and Silver Awards, GTCHS has received the Gold Award ten years in a row. Annually, GTCHS receives a bronze award from U.S. News & World Report as one of America’s Best Public Schools. GTCHS provides a public school alternative to Greenville County students, focusing on success in education through academic rigor, technology and career planning. Students of GTCHS are also offered the opportunity to earn college credit, at no cost, while still in high school. Located on the Thomas E. Barton, Jr. Campus of Greenville Technical College, GTCHS occupies a unique position in Greenville County. Students can take college classes at any of the three Greenville Technical College Campuses, at no additional charge. Sophomores can take up to 4 classes (12 credit hours); Juniors can take up to 6 classes (18 credit hours); and, Seniors can take up to 8 college classes (24 credit hours). This means a student can accumulate 54 college hours while still in High School. Thus a student can earn almost enough hours to merit an associate’s degree, which can mean as much as a 40% increase in lifetime earnings over a simple high school diploma or a GED. Students are required to maintain an 80% average in all classes and they receive the support with which to accomplish that goal.
