Mission Statement

The South Carolina Military Museum preserves the legacy of the Palmetto State’s rich military history by cultivating community interest and inspiring visitors through public outreach, educational programs, and exhibitions. Housing the largest land-based collection of firearms and military vehicles in the state, the collection represents technological innovations in military science over the past five centuries. The Museum is passionate about telling the stories of individual service and sacrifice, distinguished units, and local connections to history.

About This Cause

First established in Sumter County as the National Guard Museum and State Weapons Collection, the South Carolina Military Museum relocated to the capital city of Columbia to better serve its mission of preserving the Palmetto State’s military history. This new location offered strong partnerships with the South Carolina Military Department and the opportunity to expand the collection. Through the efforts of staff and volunteers, the former National Guard motor pool was transformed into an inviting space for the community to learn their rich military heritage. Officially recognized by the U.S. Army’s Center for Military History and the National Guard Bureau, the museum highlights South Carolina military history in three galleries available for visitors to explore. Staff members are available to assist with research inquiries and the Hugh McLaurin Library and Archive is open by appointment. The museum also hosts community events and offers a wide variety of STEM-related education programs.
