Mission Statement

Sheltering Arms is Georgia's oldest nonprofit early childhood education program and one of its most respected. Sheltering Arms closes opportunity gaps stemming from systemic racism by transforming the lives of children and their families through high-quality, equitable early childhood education and leadership in the field.

About This Cause

In 1888, a group of civically-minded Atlanta women began Sheltering Arms to serve as a safe space for the children of textile employees while their parents worked in the mills. Over the next six generations, Sheltering Arms developed into a nationally recognized early education institution. A child’s brain develops one million neural connections per second between birth and age three. Early experiences set the foundation for cognitive, social, and physical development. Sheltering Arms is dedicated to ensuring all our children have access to quality early learning because of the importance of the first five years. Sheltering Arms nurtures up to 3,500 children and their families each year, offering learning opportunities to children as young as six weeks. We know the incredible impact high-quality early learning programs have on our children. Children attending quality early learning programs are more likely to graduate high school, have a job, earn higher wages, and live their full potential. Sheltering Arms programming includes the whole family, not just the children in our centers. Our two-generation approach allows families to succeed emotionally, academically and financially.
