Mission Statement

The YMCA of Coastal Georgia has been serving the Coastal Georgia community for over 160 years, and continues to work every day to advance its cause to strengthen community through its 3 areas of focus; youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. Today the YMCA of Coastal Georgia operates 12 units, in Bryan, Chatham, Effingham, Liberty, McIntosh and Glynn Counties; included is the Pryme Tyme before and after school program, operating in 53 elementary and middle schools throughout the markets served. The YMCA serves men and women, girls and boys of all ages and from all walks of life. All of this and more is accomplished while putting forth the Y mission to put Christian principles into practice through programs that build healthy spirit, mind, and body for all.

About This Cause

Through the generous contributions of our donors, the Y is able to provide financial assistance which enables all members of the community to enjoy YMCA programs and memberships, regardless of income. This means children gaining confidence in the water and learning to swim, families getting healthier together, teens learning valuable leadership skills, and adults taking control of their lives and reducing their risk for Type II Diabetes. From exercise to education, from volleyball to volunteerism, from preschool to preventive health, the Y doesn’t just strengthen bodies. It strengthens our community. The Y is so much more than a gym. It’s a cause dedicated to youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. We currently operate ten facility branches in our seven county service area. The counties served by the Y include; Bryan, Chatham, Effingham, Evans, Glynn, Liberty and McIntosh. We also offer Pryme Tyme, our before and after school care program in 53 elementary schools in Chatham, Effingham, Glynn, and McIntosh counties. Some of our most popular program offerings include Summer Day Camp, Before and After School Care, Child Care for children six weeks to Pre-K, Teen Achievers, Group and Adult Fitness and Wellness programs, YMCA Diabetes Prevention programming, Youth Sports, Adult Sports leagues, and Swimming lessons. We are also doing work to combat childhood obesity through a program called Y Kids Run. This program is a running program geared towards children in grades kindergarten to fifth grade. It encourages them to get active and walk or run to log their miles throughout the school year. We also strive to offer a diverse menu of program offerings through our Outreach Department. Over the past seven years, support from our Annual Campaign has allowed us the opportunity to create new programs that have expanded our outreach programming for our Hispanic Neighbors through early learning and after school care programs. Our “Explore Our World” program in a traveling child care program offered in local neighborhood locations and aims to help nurture the potential of children being cared for in non-traditional child care settings by giving support to their care givers. Both the child and the caregiver get the change to build educational, physical and social skills that can be replicated at home. Another popular outreach offering is our Y on Wheels program, which takes Y programming to some of the low income housing neighborhoods in our service area where children and adults don’t have access to the Y and provides after school programming, tennis lessons, and adult chair aerobics. In addition to the programs that are run in community settings, our Outreach Department also helps to facilitate the 21st Century Community Learning Center Program in 16 Chatham County Elementary schools, too. These sites provide opportunities during non-school hours for children who attend high poverty, low performing schools to receive opportunities tutoring, and after school enrichment. Our Y is also proud to partner with Gulfstream on the Student Leadership Program to help provide valuable leadership opportunities for the teens in our community. Outreach programs also include our yearly Angel Tree programs at each of our branches along with numerous community events held at the branches. The menu of program offerings at the Y is ever changing and evolving to meet the changing needs of the communities we serve. In the third year of a five year strategic plan, our work continues to focus on Engaging Members, Strengthening the Community, Fostering a Culture Giving, and Promoting Healthy Living What stays static is the Y’s commitment to serve all people, regardless of their background or ability to pay. Our commitment to provide financial assistance to those that might otherwise go without is part of the foundation of the work area able to do every day.
