About This Cause
Senior Citizens, Inc. (SCI), a 501c(3) nonprofit organization, began in 1959 with the vision of one man, Harley C. (Nippy) Morrison. Mr. Morrison, then an executive at Union Camp, noticed that many of his older acquaintances could no longer provide adequate nutrition for themselves. To meet that need each week, he and several friends would pack bags of pre-made lunches for once-a-week delivery to 13 seniors throughout the community. From that humble beginning grew a private nonprofit organization with the mission of helping people age successfully. To accomplish its mission, Senior Citizens, Inc. provides a variety of services that meet physical, intellectual, and social needs. Most clients begin with concierge assistance, designed to provide information and help older adults and their families navigate programs or services that might meet their needs. Other programs include home-delivered meals, which currently provide 1,800 seniors each day with hot, nutritious lunches; transportation services to take seniors wherever they wish to go; personal assistance in the home; and companionship and employment opportunities through the Senior Companion program. SCI also operates Adult Day Health Centers that serve frail seniors. These Centers specialize in caring for people living with Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia and are staffed by registered nurses and specially trained aides. In addition, SCI operates Neighborhood Centers throughout the region, where seniors gather for fellowship, lunch, and activities, as well as The Learning Center, which provides humanities-based educational opportunities and cultural activities to more than 500 members. Today, Senior Citizens, Inc., with the help of hundreds of dedicated volunteers, assists more than 10,000 older adults and their families each year.
