Mission Statement
Our vision, a Georgia where all people and the environment thrives, drives our mission: Protecting Georgia through ecological and economic solutions for stewardship, conservation, and sustainable use of the land and its resources
About This Cause
The Georgia Conservancy is a statewide, member-supported conservation organization. Our work for land conservation, environmental advocacy, coastal protection, sustainable growth and outdoor stewardship recognizes the connection between the environment, the economy and our quality of life. Our Priorities: Healthy Natural Systems, Thriving Communities, Engaged Georgians and a Strong Georgia Conservancy Our History: Founded in 1967, the Georgia Conservancy has a rich history of working with private citizens, business, government and academia to protect and conserve the state's natural resources. Our major program areas are: Advocacy Whether it is lobbying legislators, meeting with local leaders or sitting at the table with state officials, we're there to advocate for Georgia's natural resources. We're at the state Capitol every day of each Legislative session promoting our conservation-minded agenda. Land Conservation We're dedicated to increasing the amount of land that is protected from development. It's a critical task, given that 92 percent of Georgia land is in private hands. Conserving land helps protect our state's threatened and endangered species and ensures that future generations have undisturbed open spaces to enjoy. Sustainable Growth Protecting Georgia's natural resources requires that built spaces - our cities, towns and neighborhoods - grow and develop in a more sustainable fashion. We help neighborhoods and local governments develop plans for future growth, and we host seminars to teach planning professionals, government officials and neighborhood residents the importance of sustainable growth. Coastal Georgia Georgia's coast stretches for nearly 110 miles and features some of the nation's most pristine beaches. Protecting our coast has been a priority of the Georgia Conservancy for nearly 50 years. We have a satellite office in historic downtown Savannah and are working on a range of projects to protect this precious natural resource. Stewardship Trips, Service Projects and Environmental Education The Georgia Conservancy offers exciting and affordable stewardship and adventure trips to the most spectacular parts of our state - from Cloudland Canyon in the north Georgia mountains to Cumberland Island on the coast, helping Georgians learn about and steward our environment, and working to remove barriers and provide outdoor educational experiences engaging underrepresented populations.
