Mission Statement
The mission of Decatur Cooperative Ministry (DCM) is to help families facing homelessness settle into safe, stable homes and build healthy lives filled with peace, hope, and opportunity. Each year as seasons change and bring welcome changes to our outdoor landscape, Decatur Cooperative Ministry (DCM) continues to serve low-income residents of DeKalb County through our robust homelessness prevention and housing programs. In 2021, despite challenges brought on by COVID-19, DCM has served over 1,060 low-income citizens of DeKalb County through our homelessness prevention and housing programs. 385 residents of DeKalb County have been assisted to maintain and obtain housing through our Homelessness Prevention and Re-Housing programs and 426 people have received emergency food supplies. Hagar’s House continues to operate as the only true emergency shelter within the physical boundaries of DeKalb County. Coupled with hotel vouchers, we have provided emergency lodging/shelter to 141 individuals in 42 households. DCM maintains 5 leased units of permanent supportive housing and 5 unit of transitional housing.
About This Cause
DCM embraces the philosophy that our services are not simply transactions, but opportunities to build relationships and support families in their efforts to achieve long-term stability. Our programs include: Project Take Charge: a prevention program that helps households in danger of eviction stay in their homes. It also combats hunger through food cooperatives and an emergency food pantry. Hagar’s House: an emergency shelter and assessment center providing 30 to 90 days of housing, hospitality, and services for women with children; Family House: interim housing of at least six months for families with multiple barriers to stability that are transitioning out of homelessness. The Kids Thrive is a privately funded program that combats homelessness and positively impacts student mobility for families with students in targeted DeKalb County schools. DCM’s case manager provides case management and coordination with schools and community partners that are uniquely tailored to address their specific needs. These programs offer an array of vitally important, high-quality services, but alone they are not enough to meet the many needs of most families experiencing homeless. That is why DCM also partners with other agencies – equally committed to bringing hope, housing, and wholeness – that offer additional resources for those we serve..
