Mission Statement

Neighborhood Christian Centers, Inc. was founded in 1978 to provide Christ-centered compassionate ministry to neighbors in need in Memphis, TN. NCC was created with the intentional model of providing grassroots ministry to meet the basic and higher needs of the inner city poor in Memphis. That mission is accomplished through 6 neighborhood-based locations that are dispersed throughout the city and to provide social services to address the critical, basic needs of neighbors as well as empowerment and educational programs to help neighbors gain the skills and knowledge needed to lift themselves out of poverty. On an annual basis, NCC's ministry touches over 30,000 individual neighbors whose ages range from newborn to the elderly. The core driving values of the organization are: Engage the Heart, Stabilize for Growth, Empower People to Find Their Path, and Challenge People to Grow.

About This Cause

The Mission of Neighborhood Christian Centers, Inc. is: To build stronger families and neighborhoods by providing compassionate, Christ-centered ministries to those in need. Neighborhood Christian Centers, Inc. was formally established in 1978, but the ministry truly began years earlier on a grassroots level by the founder JoeAnn Ballard. Reacting to a need within her community, JoeAnn and her husband Monroe offered a full-time ministry providing basic needs and shelter to individuals in their neighborhood in addition to full time foster care to over 75 children starting in 1968. Because of their work, Dr. JoeAnn Ballard was selected to spearhead the founding of Neighborhood Christian Centers (NCC). In keeping with that call to serve those in need through grassroots ministries, NCC established five satellite centers and a headquarter location within the poorest communities of Memphis. JoeAnn’s commitment to providing basic needs to the impoverished coupled with her understanding of the target population has allowed NCC to establish itself within the communities served and better access those individuals. Through the Compassionate Ministries program, NCC provides the impoverished inner city Memphis population with food, clothing, household appliances and furniture, and emergency rent and utility assistance while introducing them to NCC’s continuum of life-changing programs. By addressing this community’s highest needs- emergency assistance, education, health awareness, and employment- NCC aims to change the community- one life at a time. Below is a summary of NCC’s key programs that serve the impoverished urban Memphis community: Compassionate Ministries: Provides emergency food, clothes, and housing items to families in crisis with the strategic goal of enrolling them in transformational programs. Youth Empowered to Succeed: Provides educational support and mentoring to youth ages 5-25 through after-school programs, summer camps, and college and career programs. Women Empowered to Succeed: Serves women in a 3-phase process that includes GED preparation, basic computer skills training, job skill training in hospitality and customer service, and assistance with job placement so that they may gain employment and stabilize their families. LoveBuilders: Instructs, guides, and assists married couples and their children in framing healthy marriages and family lives, while patterning a healthy model in their churches and neighborhoods. Through this continuum of programs, NCC is working to address the ongoing issues of poverty in Memphis by reaching the community through grassroots, compassionate ministries. Due to our indigenous leadership and 13 strategic neighborhood-based locations, our programs are truly effecting change in the community by creating authentic and respectful relationships with the people we serve. Because NCC has gained the trust of the 30,000 plus neighbors we serve annually, we are able to deepen our impact beyond meeting critical Maslovian needs by empowering our neighbors through educational programs. By touching on every aspect of their lives- health, spirituality, education, relationships, and employment- we are helping our neighbors to develop the necessary skills and knowledge to enable them to get out of poverty.
