Mission Statement
With our community and partners, we will increase food security and create pathways that build a stronger Northwest North Carolina.
About This Cause
Healthy food. Nutrition education. Culinary career training. Capacity grants for local food pantries. Advocacy for North Carolina families. Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest NC provides food for today and hope for tomorrow. Whether distributing healthy food to its network of 430+ food assistance programs; training people for careers in foodservice; educating our community about nutrition; or advocating for families, Second Harvest is on the frontlines of hunger while also addressing its root causes. Learn more and get involved at SecondHarvestNWNC.org. In FY 2020, together with our partner agency network and Food Bank supporters, we provided more than 40.5 million meals for individuals and families struggling with food insecurity, About 1/3 of the people receiving food assistance from our network are children under the age of 18. With the table set in this essential way, our mission expands in local communities in partnership with others to build solutions that can help families achieve the stability and self-sufficiency they want and deserve. Feeding Futures - Fueling Young Bodies and Minds We know that no child can learn on an empty stomach or reach their full academic potential if they are not properly nourished. Together with our partner programs, local schools, and supporters, we strive to provide the nutritious meals children need to power through their days and stay focused on learning. Our programs are designed to reach children after school, on weekends during the school year, and during the summer months. Feeding Opportunity - Transforming Lives We know that many people in our community are experiencing unemployment, underemployment, or other barriers to gainful employment. Our Providence Culinary Training (PCT) program offers a fresh start and pathway to self-sufficiency. Following an intensive culinary and job skills training opportunity, graduates are ready to enter the workforce in the foodservice industry. Selected graduates can enter PCT's paid Hospitality Residency Program. Unique social enterprises, including a full-service catering operation, provide extended training for PCT graduates and revenue for Providence's culinary training program. Providence program partners include Goodwill Industries of Northwest North Carolina and Forsyth Technical Community College. Feeding Health - Resources for Healthier Living We know that families experiencing food insecurity are disproportionately affected by food-related diseases. That's why, at Second Harvest Food Bank, our goal is to do more than simply provide calories. Through focused efforts to provide families with access to more fresh fruits and produce and targeted education and outreach programs, we strive to support families and communities in caring for their health. Our Nutrition Services team provides educational programs to give families the knowledge and skills they need to shop for and prepare healthy, affordable meals. Our Food & Nutrition Services (FNS) Outreach work guides potentially eligible residents through the FNS application process to obtain additional resources for their family food budgets. Feeding Change - Thriving Communities for All We know that hunger is not an isolated problem; that issues of food insecurity and food access are inextricably linked with other challenges facing our communities, including economic opportunity, transportation, and affordable housing and healthcare. Across our region, we are doing our part, setting the table for deeper dialogue and action in our local communities; connecting our efforts with those of others to help families achieve the stability and self-sufficiency they want and deserve. Addressing food insecurity and its root causes is vital to the health and prosperity of our communities and nation. Strengthened public-private partnerships are needed, and we will continue to ask our elected officials on all levels to stand up for programs and policies that can help our families and communities. Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest NC is a proud member of Feeding America, a collaborative and coordinated network of more than 200 food banks united nationally and operating locally to address the problem of hunger in every community in the nation.
