Mission Statement

CTNC is a conservation organization working across North Carolina to address the most important issues of our time. We believe that now, more than ever, we need to: · Conserve more land in collaboration with communities; · Use land conservation to lessen the impacts of our changing climate; and · Ensure that conservation benefits everyone by being more inclusive and equitable. Community. Climate. Equity. These three priorities drive our work. Our goal is to conserve land in ways that inspire and enable people to build resilient, just communities.

About This Cause

Conservation Trust for North Carolina (“CTNC”) is a nonprofit formed in 1991. In 1996, Governor Hunt designated CTNC to coordinate land protection along the Blue Ridge Parkway. Since then, CTNC has protected 78 properties totaling more than 35,000 acres along the Parkway by collaborating with the National Park Service, private landowners, local land trusts, and other public agencies. We are dedicated to (1) conserving more land in collaboration with communities; (2) using conservation to lessen the impacts of a changing climate; and (3) ensuring that conservation benefits everyone by being more inclusive and equitable. Climate + Community + Equity drive our work in the following program areas: Building Resilience through Direct Land Conservation: CTNC is building climate resilience through high-impact, direct land conservation, primarily focused along the Blue Ridge Parkway. We have conserved over 35,000 acres along the Parkway, resulting in cleaner water, natural stormwater management, carbon storage, plant and wildlife habitat preservation, and protected views that ensure the local economies thrive. Land protection priorities are informed by computer analysis of conservation values, including: water quality, ecological integrity, Parkway views, development threat, and resilience to climate change impacts. Building Resilience through Community-led Partnerships: CTNC partners with communities to address the impacts of climate change. Our equity-based approach began with building flood resilience in Princeville, NC, which experienced devastating flooding from Hurricanes Floyd and Matthew, among others. Through our partnership, Princeville became a national model for how community-led conservation solutions can mitigate future risk. Installation of stormwater management solutions like rain gardens, community gardens, and tree coverage in flood prone areas redirects 30,000 gallons of stormwater to ecologically beneficial uses. Building Resilience by Activating Local Capacity: With a dual focus on increasing local community capacity and expanding the diversity of people connected to conservation, CTNC created a statewide Resilience Service Network. Using data-driven GIS maps to identify communities in greatest need, we coordinate the placement of AmeriCorps service members to help implement community-led plans that address climate-related challenges.
