Mission Statement

To lead the effort to solve the most pressing health issues that affect Black women and girls in the U.S. Through investments in evidence-based strategies, we deliver bold new programs and advocate for health-promoting policies.

About This Cause

The Black Women’s Health Imperative (BWHI) is the only national organization dedicated to addressing the health and wellness of the nation’s 22 million Black women and girls. We are the committed thought leader on how best to change the conversation about and approach to Black women’s health; we invest in innovative solutions that combine science, policy and community assets to promote health equity at the national, state and local levels; and, most importantly, we provide a safe space for Black women and girls to talk about their health. For the past 38 years, BWHI has worked to advance health equity and social justice for Black women, across their lifespan, through policy, advocacy, education, and research and leadership development. A significant part of our work over the past 10 years has focused on addressing health equity, chronic illness disease, and the disproportionate rates of HIV infection among Black women.
