Mission Statement
Our Home is filled with more than help; it is filled with hope… For the family of a hospitalized child, it will be the most important House they will ever visit. The Ronald McDonald House in Savannah, Georgia, helps families of seriously ill, hospitalized children cope with the stress and expense of daily living while trying to be close and emotionally strong for their child. More than just a room and a hot meal, the Ronald McDonald House is a “Home Away from Home” for families faced with a child’s medical crisis. It can be a quiet place to be alone, or a place of companionship, sharing, and emotional support.
About This Cause
The Ronald McDonald House Charities of the Coastal Empire When a child becomes seriously ill, the entire family suffers, particularly if the child is hospitalized or receives outpatient treatment far from home over an extended period of time. To be near their child, parents often sleep on floors, chairs, cots or bear the expense and impersonal atmosphere of a motel room. At a time when parents need all their strength for their child, the simple demands of everyday life can seem overwhelming. For these families, the Ronald McDonald House offers a refuge from the hospital, a “home-away-from-home” where they can have a room of their own, a comfortable bed, use of a kitchen and laundry facilities and a cup of hot coffee in the morning. The Ronald McDonald House provides over 4200 family nights each year at our “home away from home” for the families of critically ill children. Families come from across Georgia, from our neighboring southeastern states, and from many other countries around the world to stay during the hospitalization of their child. It is a very special home that opens its doors during a time of need. Savannah’s Ronald McDonald House is conveniently located across the street from the Children’s Hospital of the Memorial Hospital System, and just down the Road from St. Joseph Candler Hospital. When a child is sick, the entire family is affected. Having a “home base” minutes from the patient’s bedside gives a sense of comfort and security during emotionally trying periods. The Ronald McDonald House has thirteen bedrooms each with a private bath, television, and phone. The families share a large living room and double-size kitchen with an adjoining dining area. There is a small sun porch for relaxing and reading, a playroom for siblings and laundry facilities. The House is staffed with a House Operations Manager, Asst. House Manager, Evening Manager, Programs Coordinator and an Executive Director, as well as a wealth of volunteers. Since 2006, the Ronald McDonald Family Room has also provided a quiet place of respite within ST. Joseph Candler Hospital, and in 2013 a second Room was added at Children’s Hospital at Memorial. We provide services for more than 3000 family members and friends. Staffed by volunteer hosts, parents enjoy refreshments, visit with other families in similar circumstances, can do laundry and shower, and use the computers to access information about their children’s illnesses and communicate with relatives and friends back home. The Ronald McDonald Family Room is an extension of the Ronald McDonald House Charities, allowing us to reach out to even more families. Whether they are local residents or from out-of-town, families have found the Family Rom a wonderful resource unique to our Greenville community. The Ronald McDonald House depends on the resources and volunteer support from our local community to provide this outreach to those in a time of crisis. It is funded completely by donated funds. These funds are received by corporate and civic organizations, churches, schools and individuals. Several fundraisers throughout the year help defray the cost of House operations.
