Mission Statement

Mustard Seed Communities (MSC) is a non-profit organization that cares for the most vulnerable populations in the developing world. MSC began in 1978 as home for abandoned children in Jamaica. Today we provide support services to hundreds of children, adolescents, and adults at 19 locations in four countries: Jamaica, Dominican Republic, Nicaragua, and Zimbabwe. Mustard Seed Communities has grown in scope as well as scale. Our organization provides housing, nutrition, education, and medical care for hundreds of residents affected by physical and mental disabilities and HIV/AIDS. Mustard Seed Communities is driven by mission volunteers and donors. Mustard Seed’s philanthropic giving doubled between 2008 and 2014 to $3.5 million. In 2014, over 1,100 volunteers joined mission trips to MSC locations. This combination of funding and volunteer support has allowed Mustard Seed to build better support infrastructure at our homes and hire and train more people to provide better care for our residents.

About This Cause

Mustard Seed Communities (MSC) is a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to caring for the most vulnerable populations in society. MSC began in 1978 as a home for children who had been abandoned on the outskirts of Kingston, Jamaica. We have since expanded within Jamaica and built additional facilities in Nicaragua, Dominican Republic and Zimbabwe. The majority of our programs are dedicated to the care of children with serious physical and mental disabilities such as Down syndrome, hydrocephalus, cerebral palsy and muscular dystrophy. MSC also cares for children affected by HIV/AIDS in Jamaica and Zimbabwe. In Jamaica, we have a home for teenage mothers and their babies. Our vision for each apostolate is to create a loving and caring environment to aid in the physical, mental and spiritual development of our residents. In addition to caring for our residents, MSC is involved in numerous outreach and community development initiatives in the countries where we serve. MSC employs over 300 local workers, offering jobs, training and economic viability to people who would otherwise have no opportunity to break out of the cycle of poverty. MSC strives to introduce skills into the community and to empower its people. We are working towards helping our apostolates become fully self sufficient through sustainable agriculture. Our hope is that this will improve the quality of life for our residents while fostering a sense of responsibility within the local community. Over 1,000 mission volunteers travel to Mustard Seed Communities every year. The mission program is a cornerstone of Mustard Seed Communities, as our mission volunteers are often our biggest supporters and advocates. Many mission volunteers find this experience personally transformative and when they return we rely on them to be a voice for our children and an advocate for Mustard Seed Communities.
