Mission Statement

The GABWA Foundation is the chartable arm of GABWA, whose mission is to provide services to the community, which further the interests of women and children throughout Georgia and that increase the representation of Black women in the legal profession.

About This Cause

GABWA is a statewide organization founded in 1981 focused on 1) women and children’s issues, 2) inclusive and diverse representation in the judiciary and public offices, and 3) a proactive stance on political issues. In May 1983, GABWA founded The Georgia Association of Black Women Attorneys Foundation, Inc., a designated 501(c)(3) charitable organization, to facilitate GABWA’s charitable and educational activities. GABWA has members throughout the state with regional chapters in Albany, Athens, Augusta, Columbus, Macon, and Savannah. Our services address a wide range of people, including Black women attorneys, women, children, and communities – including historically underserved communities. GABWA membership is open to anyone, regardless of race or sex, and includes judges, law students, professors, government lawyers, and more. Funds donated to the GABWA Foundation facilitate the implementation of several initiatives including a scholarship program, the GABWA Foundation’s Sister2Sister Mentoring Program® (“Sister2Sister®), the Civil Pro Bono Wills Project (“Wills Project”), and the Community Health Fair (Health Fair). Scholarship program. For over 20 years, the GABWA Foundation has awarded over $600,000.00 in scholarships to deserving Georgia female law students. These scholarships provide resources to deserving law students during a time of need. GABWA Foundation scholarship recipients have become GABWA Presidents, law firm partners, judges, and leaders in the legal field. Sister2Sister® (“S2S”) is an award-winning diversion academy for at-risk teen girls of the Fulton County Juvenile Court, comprised of mentoring and bi-monthly workshops and trainings. The workshops include topics such as the importance of self-worth, practical ways to avoid negative peer pressure, health education, and public speaking. Since its inception in 2000, the program has served over 1,000 young ladies, many of whom have risen above their circumstances to attend and graduate from college. The program introduces its participants to the promise that their lives hold, if they make positive choices such as continuing their education and developing behaviors that will prevent future contact with the criminal justice system. The Civil Pro Bono Wills Project. As a partnership between the GABWA Foundation, Black Women Will, the Fulton County Probate Court and the Atlanta Legal Aid Society, Inc., GABWA members and volunteers provide educational services and vital life planning guidance to women of Atlanta who suffer from AIDS/HIV, cancer, and other terminal illnesses. This guidance includes the preparation of critical legal documents such as advanced directives, healthcare powers of attorney, guardianships, and wills. The Community Health Fair. The GABWA Foundation partners with the Center for Black Women’s Wellness (“CBWW”) to provide health services through an Annual Women’s Health Fair in the Mechanicsville community. All the health services, screenings, food, and educational materials are provided completely free of charge to the community.
