Mission Statement
The mission of Acadiana Symphony Orchestra & Conservatory of Music is to inspire culture through music. The vision of the ASO is to bolster our cultural economy and uphold unparalleled civic value through the power and joy of music by providing excellence in orchestral performances of diverse repertoire, and educational experiences to inspire and enrich our future generations, thus creating a vibrant community in which to live and work.
About This Cause
Acadiana Symphony Orchestra is proud to present a number of symphonic concerts throughout each season, each year striving to continue to push creative boundaries using the incredible local professional talent, as well as our locally talented youth, and internationally renown artists for our community to experience. We also host three annual fundraisers that provide different ways to celebrate and raise money for the vital education programs that the Symphony provides. DoReME! is a music enrichment curriculum currently taught at Truman Early Childhood Development Center (Lafayette Parish) by two educational professionals employed by ASO. Our educators instruct at least five, 30 minute classes, per day integrating music into the school’s standard lesson plans, utilizing basic instruments such as maracas, sand blocks, rhythm sticks, as well as introducing classical instruments and classical music, to stimulate creativity as well as assisting with the development of fine and gross motor skills – enhancing the early educational experience for over 500 students per school year. The objective of DoReME! and all other outreach programs through the Conservatory is to give the children of our community the opportunity to experience different cultures through music and inspire creativity thusly expanding cultural impact and securing a legacy of music for generations to come. Plan for sustainability – with continued partnerships with LPSS, grants, local and state funding, and our generous foundations, sponsors and donors who truly believe in the results of music enrichment education, we are able to continue the very successful DoReME! program as well as begin the strategic plan to broaden our reach and impact through an after-school program that will focus on the next age group, thus expanding the ASO’s educational footprint and impacting more lives in our community. We are currently negotiating a partnership with Kids Orchestra from Baton Rouge. They have designed their after-school program after El Sistema and have molded it to work within the parameters of the Louisiana school system as well as infusing local culture. Kids Orchestra was founded in 2011 and has been going strong ever since. Kids Orchestra currently serves nearly 800 students in East Baton Rouge parish where they study an instrument, perform in an ensemble, and/or sing in a choir. Bringing this successful model to Acadiana will allow the broad expansion of music education, experience and appreciation to a wider range of students during formative years, allowing our youth to continue to participate in a positive music experience, or to experience the joy of music for the first time. All of these education initiatives fill the need for the arts in our schools and for school aged children. The government funding for the arts has been severely cut over the years and unfortunately arts programs in all forms are regularly the first to be cut. However through generous donations from various sources we are able to continue the commitment to the arts locally while reaping the proven benefits they bring not only to our youth but to the health and vitality of our community as a whole. Acadiana Symphony Orchestra wants to also help build a healthier community through live symphonic performances in high-stress, hospital and nursing home environments to aid in healing and boost immune function. These short performances, some larger concerts, would also be live-streamed for the benefit of those who are physically unable to attend. With our new Healing Through Music program, we will be able to extend our pledge to help build a vibrant community through music by sharing the healing and stress relieving benefits of live symphonic music where most needed in Acadiana, thus creating the opportunity to reach and positively effect a broad-based demographic that may not have the opportunity to experience the Symphony otherwise.
