Mission Statement

Seeking to put God's love into action, Habitat for Humanity brings people together to build homes, communities and hope.

About This Cause

Wichita Habitat for Humanity (WHFH) is a 501(c)(3) with a mission to “bring people together to build homes, communities and hope”. It offers affordable home ownership opportunities to individuals and families that earn between 30-60% of the median income for Sedgwick County. To be considered affordable, housing costs – including the mortgage, insurance, property taxes and utilities – should not exceed 30% of monthly income. Habitat homes are affordable because they are sold at no profit and are financed with a 0% interest mortgage. WHFH’s family selection criteria comply with the provisions of federal housing law including: the Fair Housing Act and all Fair Housing Laws; the Equal Credit Opportunity Act; the Fair Credit Reporting Act; the Privacy Act; and the Americans with Disabilities Act. WHFH partner families meet the low and very-low income guidelines established by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. They also must have 1) a need for affordable housing, 2) the ability to repay a 20-year, 0% interest mortgage, and 3) a willingness to partner with WHFH. A single person must work 250 sweat equity hours and a couple must work 400 hours combined. This consists of volunteer work on the construction site, working in the ReStore, or various program office tasks. Included in the 250 hours is 40 hours of homebuyer education courses, including basic financial literacy. Partner families are also required to put money aside each month that will go toward their house closing costs. WHFH’s commitment towards revitalizing our community includes construction of more than 200 new single family homes, and a new home repair program for existing homeowners based on the same principles as the new home program. All new homes exceed Energy Star 3.0 standards and provide buyers with energy efficient homes that produce lower utility bills. The average monthly payment, including principal, property taxes, and insurance is $500. Over the past 28 years, WHFH has positively affected the lives of 200 families, including over 400 children. Our volunteer program has engaged thousands in the construction of homes, building leadership skills, and teamwork among employees of hundreds of businesses, civic and church organizations. The construction of new homes results in increased property tax revenue for the community, and the critical repairs offered to existing homeowners in need result in healthier aging in place opportunities in the community. Outcomes of homeownership have been studied and quantified by the National Association of Home Builders and others, making it possible to predict the following outcomes for families, and immediate economic impact in Sedgwick County. The family sees more stable, consistent employment and greater employment opportunities, improved health statuses, and increased success rates in school. For the homeowners’ children, there are reduced rates of juvenile delinquency and teen pregnancy, increased college graduation rates, and a higher likelihood of home ownership within 10 years of leaving home. The most recent data shows that more than 95% of all WHFH homeowners since the first house was built in 1990 continue to meet monthly mortgage payments and are thriving as home owners.
