About This Cause
Over the last 38 years, this community-based nonprofit has grown from an all-volunteer team of victim advocates to a comprehensive, multi-specialty resource for acute response, community engagement, and professional education on sexual violence response. We work to dispel myths, normalize conversations, and eliminate stigma and shame carried by survivors of intimate interpersonal violence. Our name, Mosaic Georgia, represents our focus to help people put the pieces of their lives back together with dignity and discretion. We offer a mosaic of services and coordinate with several agencies and organizations with a trauma-informed, victim-centered approach. Mosaic Georgia is a key participant in the Gwinnett and Rockdale Judicial Circuits’ Sexual Assault Response Protocols and Child Abuse Response Protocols. PROGRAMS Mosaic Georgia provides comprehensive services related to the immediate and long-term effects of sexual abuse, exploitation, and assault: 1. Acute Client Care: Victim Advocacy, Accompaniment, Resources 2. Forensic Interview & Medical Examination Services 3. Resilience Services: no cost Legal assistance, mental health & wellness programs (trauma-focused therapies for ages 4 - adult; support groups; Wholeness Collective healing programs) Mosaic Georgia’s center is a secure, child-friendly and safe atmosphere designed to facilitate privacy for multiple client services simultaneously. There are no fees or co-pays to victims/patients or their families. Violence Prevention: Work in the community to raise awareness to improve communications and healthy relationships and understand every person deserves respect. Professional Education & Training: Our SANE Community Support Network provides professional education programs including didactic courses, clinical skills, and other workshops for practitioners working in forensic nursing. Professional education is also provided to law enforcement, grand juries, educators, mental health providers, and physicians. WHY WE'RE SPECIAL - WHAT we do and HOW we do it Mosaic Georgia offers an innovative approach to a specialized public health issue: sexual assault and abuse. Our center is a free-standing facility with multi-disciplinary services. This community-based model frees up hospital emergency departments from these cases which require evidence collection, coordination with law enforcement, and eventual court testimony. One-stop-shop. Because we have the advocacy specialists, forensic interviewers, forensic medical care, housing and legal services in one location, we can serve clients comprehensively and in a trauma-informed manner. This reduces the instances the client must explain the sexual mistreatment that created new problems. 24/7 Crisis Line. We are available to listen, support and inform people who experienced sexual violence or a loved one who wants to know how to be supportive. We also organize a coordinated response for forensic medical care any time of day or night. call 866-900-6019 Coordinate Sexual Assault Response Team (SART) Response. We coordinate timely services for victims and law enforcement and provide information and support for callers who experienced sexualized violence. Trauma-informed and Culturally-competent Care. Just 30% of our clients identify as White, so we've cultivated a racially and ethnically diverse team in direct care and leadership. We are committed to continual learning and developing proficiency in working with clients and families whose backgrounds differ from each of our individual personal experiences. Multi-cultural Engagement. Our bi-lingual staff share their fluency in other languages to reach out to the Korean and Spanish-speaking communities. Our multi-cultural staff engage directly with clients and develop relationships with organizations that focus on populations which experience oppression and discrimination. Campus Outreach & Prevention Strategies. Mosaic Georgia maintains a close working relationship with Georgia Gwinnett College (GGC) including their Police and Student Affairs departments. It is an active member of the GGC Sexual Assault Planning Committee and routinely participates in student health fairs and other related programs/projects. Community outreach through events such as safety fairs, cultural events, and festivals. Professional education: We conduct dozens of education sessions by invitation to employers, physicians, educators, child care providers, youth groups, churches, advisors of youth groups, and coaches across Gwinnett County. Sexual Assault Response & Mitigation: for college staff, resident advisors, and others SANE Success Institute – a community of best practices for Sexual Assault Nurse/Forensic Examiners (SANE/SAFE) Mosaic Georgia developed a comprehensive model for supporting this vital nursing specialty unlike any in the country. This Network provides private, professional online support for individual SANE/SAFE and Sexual Assault Centers (SAC), Children’s Advocacy Centers (CAC) and hospital-based programs in Georgia. Current membership represents 20 different agencies, both SACs and CACs throughout the state of Georgia. Mosaic’s program does not compete with college-based programs, but rather supports retention of practicing SANES and provide training to practicing RNs who want to further their education and need to fit in the coursework and clinical skills practice around their busy schedules. RNs who practice in rural areas gain a particular benefit from the Network, as many serve multiple counties in isolation from other SANEs. Offerings include: • SANE Community Support Network: Members also have access to special topic webinars, a sharing library by topic, and “lounges” divided by roles so nurses and administrators can share information, news, and advice real-time. Hosted on a private virtual platform. SANEs maintain proficiency in the specialty and receive ongoing clinical training, supervision and support to maintain current best practices. • For new SANE/SAFE: 40 hours of didactic training, including hands-on evidence collection experience. Our didactic Adolescent & Adult and Pediatric SANE/SAFE Training curricula includes current clinical and legal practices and scientific knowledge of the neurobiology of trauma. More than 500 Registered Nurses and Nurse Practitioners have completed the 40-hour didactic Sexual Assault Nurse/Forensic Examiner course since 2007. • From classroom to exam room: Clinical skills workshops provide hands-on practice for adolescent/adult exams with a focus on patient interaction, documentation, and evidence collection. • When SANE must testify: A unique feature of our professional SANE education is preparation to give expert witness testimony. We bring new SANEs into a courtroom to observe and participate in a mock trial with a jury, prosecutor, and defense attorney. • Professional Peer Review: We provide the only monthly live peer review for adolescent and adult cases in Georgia. SANEs across the state discuss case examples and ways of working effectively with law enforcement while maintaining quality patient care. Benefits of Mosaic Georgia's services to Victims & Family 1.
