Mission Statement
The Patrons of the Public Library (POPL) is a local, non-profit organization which supports the work of the East Baton Rouge Parish Library, both financially as well as through volunteer efforts.
About This Cause
What POPL Does Many of the Library’s programs and services would not be possible without continuing financial support from POPL. POPL helps underwrite such annual events and series as the prestigious Author/Illustrator series, the Summer Reading Program, the One Book/One Community reading series and our Attic Treasures & Collectibles series. POPL has also helped fund pilot programs for Prime Time Family Reading Time and the Career Center and has also assisted the Library in bringing traveling exhibitions to the system. These are just a few of the many programs which POPL supports through their volunteer efforts and financial assistance. POPL also helps to support programs and events by purchasing special materials not provided for in the Library budget. In addition, POPL supports the campaign for passage of the Library’s 10-year dedicated property tax, which provides almost 100% of the Library’s funding needed to operate the Main Library and all 13 existing regional and community branches. Originally formed in 1984 as the Library’s “friends” group, POPL is comprised of local citizens from the community who appreciate and value our libraries as educational, informational, cultural and recreational institutions and who are interested in supporting the East Baton Rouge Parish Library. POPL works to assure proper funding for public libraries at the local, state and national levels. Today, more than ever before, the Library needs your support! Through the efforts of the Patrons of the Public Library, the East Baton Rouge Parish Library can continue to provide unique and essential services, events, and programs for our community.
