Mission Statement
Cool Girls is dedicated to the self-empowerment of girls in low-income communities. At Cool Girls we strive to provide Atlanta girls with the knowledge, skills, tools and confidence they need to succeed and become productive citizens in our community. Since 1989, Cool Girls has served 6,000 of Atlanta’s highest-risk girls, and we strive to continue to expand to meet the demands of more than 30,000 girls living in poverty in Atlanta. Cool Girls’ community partners, mentors, and volunteer networks support girls holistically in all aspects of their development – breaking the cycles of poverty, low self-esteem, and teen pregnancy.
About This Cause
Cool Girls currently serves 350 girls in eight Title 1 public schools across DeKalb and Fulton County. Our programs are offered to girls in 2nd thru 12th grade to ensure they are supported both emotionally and academically as well as guided through their entire educational journey. Cool Girls targets girls at the highest risk of drop-out and teen pregnancy by forming strategic, long-term partnerships with Title I schools in metro Atlanta where at least 60% of student population receives free or reduced lunch (a family of four making $785 per week qualifies for reduced lunch and a family of four making $552 per week qualifies for free lunch.) Over 90% of our participants qualify for free or reduced lunch. Approximately 90% of our participants are in grades 2nd through 8th. The remaining 10% are high school girls who participated in Cool Girls programs in elementary and/or middle school. Our comprehensive life-skills programs develop girls into confident women through education and exposure to a broader world of opportunity. We instill self-reliance and provide mentoring relationships, academic support, healthy living education, field trips and service learning projects. Our programs are as follows: • Cool Girls Club is a life-skills development and academic support program for girls in 2nd-7th grade which includes: o Cool Tech is a technology and STEM education program. o Cool Fitness fosters physical activity and healthy lifestyles. o Girls Club: Unplugged is our newest initiative for girls in 6th-7th grade to continue participating in Girls Club if their middle school is not a partner site. This “bridge” program takes place on the 4th Saturday of each month at the Arthur Blank YMCA which is centrally located for our girls. • Cool Scholars is a life-skills and leadership development program for girls in 8th–12th grade to continue with Cool Girls. • Cool Sisters is a one-to-one mentoring program for girls in 2nd-12th grade. • Cool Connections activities are designed to enrich the Cool Girls experience include: o Field Trips off-site outings that expose girls to cultural, educational and social experiences. o A Beautiful Me! is a pregnancy prevention workshop that includes a symposium for parents. o Shopping Days are two incentive-based events for girls to ‘shop’ for back-to-school essentials and holiday gifts.
