Mission Statement
Our mission is to prevent suicide. With a focus on musicians, Nuçi’s Space advocates for and helps to alleviate the suffering for those living with a brain illness and fights to end the stigma of mental illness. To accomplish our mission, Nuçi’s Space maintains a health and resource center for musicians as a safe space to seek support and guidance, provides access to affordable, obstacle-free professional care, actively participates in treatment and educates about awareness, prevention and the risk factors of brain illnesses.
About This Cause
In 1999, the Phillips family of Atlanta formed the Nuçi Phillips Memorial Foundation in memory of their 22-year-old son and brother Nuçi, who in 1996 killed himself after a long battle with major depression. Nuçi was a talented musician and a promising student at the University of Georgia in Athens. Having lived the course of Nuçi’s illness with him, the family recognized the need for obstacle free, user-friendly ways of treating and supporting those who suffer from depression and other such disorders. With a focus on Nuçi’s fellow musicians, the nonprofit Foundation created Nuçi’s Space. Our programs include: Health and Wellness Initiatives - Professional Counseling Assistance Program, which connects musicians and artists in need with low-cost counseling and psychiatric services. - Free and low-cost medical, dental, and eye care - Support groups Musician Services (all low-cost) - Practice rooms - Equipment rentals - Studio recording Youth Outreach - Camp Amped, a summer and after-school program for students 11-17, is a unique program that incorporates the importance of positive mental health with the opportunity to become a better musician - Pre-Amped, an expansion of our Camp Amped program for 4th and 5th grade elementary school students who show an interest and passion for music
