About This Cause

THE CARYING PLACE is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that has provided transitional housing and support services to homeless working families since 1993. Our 16 week program gives these homeless working families with children an opportunity to learn how to improve their financial situation and to obtain permanent affordable housing. Each family accepted into the program is paired with a volunteer team who work with that family to develop a personalized plan for self-sufficiency. The families are housed in fully furnished apartments with all services provided for the length of the 16 week program. We are based in Cary, NC, but serve families from all over Wake County. Currently each year, we serve over 34 families with housing, utilities, and support services and another 40 graduate families for a total of 74 a year. Our volunteers and staff work with each family to help empower them for success and ending the cycle of homelessness. teaching them life skills such as credit clean-up, budgeting, decision making, resource development, health & nutrition, and childcare. Not only do we have a program for the adult family members, our children’s program is a very important element of our total focus on family health. Homelessness is especially traumatic for the children. Our Children’s program strives to decrease these negative effects of homelessness and trauma for our children. Each child is assessed to ensure their physical, emotional and educational needs are being met, and are connected with community resources to provide the most comprehensive services possible. Our Children’s Program meets two hours weekly for activities that stimulate creativity and learning, foster personal growth and esteem, as well as equip our TCP children with the self-confidence and coping skills necessary to grow into successful adults. Our weekly program uses a variety of methods such as children’s literature, art projects, and psycho-educational games to educate and facilitate self-expression. The children use a wide variety of visual arts and media techniques to express feelings that are often difficult for children, especially those traumatized by homelessness. These artistic outlets allow them to express feelings about themselves, their families, their fears, joys and concerns. Our Children’s Program volunteers are trained in trauma informed practices as well as the effects of homelessness on children. Our dedicated children’s program volunteers allow for an average adult to child ration of 1 to 2 or less. It is our goal to ensure that the children feel safe, respected and supported. We serve over 60 children per year. Our graduate families are enrolled in our Aftercare program. Peer-run, Aftercare is a monthly meeting for graduates to meet in a supportive forum to share successes and ask for help in problem solving. We measure success in having a family living in permanent housing one year after graduate. We currently have a 80% success rate.
