Mission Statement
Dedicated to excellence, the Harlequins are striving to give national credibility to rugby in the South as well as right here in Atlanta. With the current popularity of all women’s sports, it is our desire to bring rugby to the forefront as a viable sport for women.
About This Cause
The Atlanta Harlequins are a 40-year old women+ rugby club. As one of the oldest rugby clubs in the nation, we pride ourselves on being a grassroots team - meaning we introduce people who have never played rugby to the sport. Over the years, our players have gone on to play and coach professionally, play on the USA Eagles national team, and most importantly foster a love for the sport. Currently, the Atlanta Harlequins plays in the D1 Capital union, meaning we travel up the east coast of the USA playing teams in DC, Philadelphia, Virginia, and our good neighbors in Raleigh. While we play at the highest level of non-professional competition, we still travel to tournaments around the south as well. We're also a non-profit who does our own fundraising and volunteering around the city. Rugby is a sport like no other. It asks for mental acuity, physical strength, speed, fitness, a little bit of insanity, and love. Typically, union rugby is played with either 15 or 7 players on the field at a time for each team. The goal is to touch the large, egg-shaped ball down in the try zone. The ball cannot be passed forward at all, so all forward progress is made by running with the ball or kicking it and hoping you are faster than the other players to get to it first. There's no rest, either. If you're on offense and you lose the ball, you're suddenly playing defense. It's 80 minutes of aggression, tactics, heart, and respect.
