About This Cause
The Columbus Regional Tennis Association (CORTA), formerly known as the Columbus Tennis Patrons, was founded in 1952 by influential members of the community who had a love for tennis and a desire to help build the original courts at Cooper Creek Tennis Center. CORTA, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization, has become one of the most highly regarded Community Tennis Associations (CTA) in the United States. Throughout the years, CORTA has received numerous awards from USTA Georgia, USTA Southern and the USTA for the work done in promoting and developing tennis in our community. Most recently, CORTA was awarded the CTA of the Year by USTA Georgia, USTA Southern and USTA National! The Georgia Parks & Recreation Association presented CORTA a Special Recognition Award; and November 7, 2017 was proclaimed Columbus Regional Tennis Association (CORTA) Day by the City of Columbus. During the pandemic USTA Georgia recognized TennisWorks! as the “Best COVID-19 at Home Tennis Program”. We are an organization you can rely on. CORTA is based at Cooper Creek Tennis Center which is one of the largest public tennis facilities in the country. In an effort to improve Cooper Creek, CORTA partnered with the City of Columbus and Columbus State University to expand the tennis center to add 12 hard courts, 9 clay courts, 4 junior courts, and building to house the CORTA Office and CSU Tennis program. This new addition opened to the public in October 2016, and was dedicated in April 2017. CORTA offers clinics, leagues and tournaments for citizens of all ages and abilities. Our Adaptive programs include Wheelchair Tennis and “Ad In” for Special Needs athletes. TennisWorks! is our Outreach program for underserved and at-risk youth. TennisWorks! is a USTA National Junior Tennis Learning (NJTL) chapter. In 1969, the National Junior Tennis League was created by Arthur Ashe as a way to gain and hold the attention of young people, with the hope of teaching them the importance of character, getting an education and becoming productive citizens. Tennis was once thought to be a sport of the wealthy elite, however now the sport is more open and accessible to everyone. CORTA continues to offer free services to TennisWorks! participants to meet these goals through on-court activities and an academic enhancement program. To further the growth of tennis in this community, CORTA will continue to develop programs for all current and future tennis enthusiasts.
