Mission Statement
Community Connections’ mission is “healing homelessness and fighting poverty, one life at a time.” While seemingly diverse, all programs are directed towards helping families become educated, independent, and permanently removed from ongoing cycles of poverty.
About This Cause
Community Connections has been providing crucial social services to North Florida for over a century. Founded in 1911 as an affiliate of the Young Women’s Christian Association, the board of directors elected to become a separate 501c3 agency in 2000, in order to better serve the needs of local families. We are now a totally independent agency; our mission is “Healing homelessness and fighting poverty, one life at a time” and our vision is “Through the work of Community Connections, families achieve lasting self-sufficiency.” Current programming includes: 1. Rapid Rehousing and Shelter Diversion programs: Community Connections’ Rapid Rehousing programs provide housing search assistance, rental assistance, and transitional case management to families and seniors who are homeless or at risk of homelessness. Rapid rehousing has shown great promise in helping individuals and families successfully avoid homelessness, or prevent subsequent episodes of homelessness. 2. Housing for Homeless Families: In 1979, the agency opened North Florida's first housing program for homeless women and children: the Florence N. Davis Center. The Davis Center is still a critical component of the city's homeless Continuum of Care, providing shelter and services to families who are often escaping violence or extreme poverty. Other housing programs serve families (including veterans and families with a disabled family member) in three Florida counties: Duval, Clay and Nassau. 3. Head Start and Early Head Start: Because families must have stable childcare to have stable employment, the agency runs a Head Start center for children ages six weeks to five years old. The five-star center is the City of Jacksonville's most requested Head Start program. 4. After-School Programs and Summer Camps: The agency provides more than 800 children with after-school programs and camps throughout the city. All sites are in at-risk communities or Title 1 Schools, and serve low-income or very low-income families. 5. Adult Education and Employment Readiness: Community Connections also provides adult education and life skills classes that help homeless and urban core residents increase their literacy levels and employment skills. The agency serves some 3,600 individuals each year, including about 3,000 children and youth. Decades of dedication to the community has earned the agency its reputation as a model full-service provider capable of accomplishing its goals and establishing effective partnerships within the community.
