About This Cause

Programming at FLCT is education based. 1. Theatre-Making at FLCT Theatre-Making at FLCT is an exciting new "arts education" initiative designed to provide students personal and pre-professional development in the ever expanding theatre industry. The program offers two distinct opportunity tracks: economic mobility and collegiate prep for high school students with an intentional focus of recruiting participants from marginalized communities or from historically underserved and under-resourced areas. Through a variety of workshops, hands-on artistic and technical training, and community partnerships, participants will learn the many facets of the theatre-making process including: set design, light design, sound mixing, costume design, producing, and professional development for performers. Students gain pre-professional training for high paying career track and cutting edge “hard skills” training in every facet of the technical theatre-making process while simultaneously developing the “soft skills” of leadership, teamwork, communication and more, in a way that only the arts can. Participants will hone in on the skill sets needed to enter the creative industries work force, gain acceptance into top collegiate training programs or benefit from the creativity of production at a deeper level while growing into young adulthood. Activities cover all aspects of theatre production from technical production to performance through focused mentorship by leading professionals and experiential learning in a professional theatre within the structure of a weekly after school program model. With individual and group mentoring, students learn leadership, technical, creative, and professional skills which prepare them for success in life and in the workplace. Programming at Theatre-Making at FLCT prioritizes transformational personal development, encouraging students to realize their potential and work at the highest levels. Whether students continue on to college, seek entry-level positions in theatre, entertainment or technical production or pursue other interests, programming will challenge and encourage students. They will grow as individuals and as part of a collective as they gain knowledge, work creatively and improve interpersonal skills, group dynamics, leadership, responsibilities and social emotional coping and communication skills. 2. The Film Academy at FLCT Through a variety of workshops, hands-on artistic and technical training, community partnerships, and film festivals, participants will learn the skills needed to enter the creative industries work force, gain acceptance into top collegiate level training programs, or benefit from the creativity of production at a deep level while growing into young adulthood. Academy activities cover all aspects of the filmmaking process through focused mentorship by leading professionals and experiential learning on high end, industry standard equipment within the structure of a weekly after school program model. Yet the academy aims to reach far beyond the typical scholastic or extra-curricular after school opportunities typically accessible to those students, as it will also completely prepare them for numerous opportunities after high school with real-world internships and experiences that will set them apart. Through partnerships that include the Broward Film Commission, students will also experience hands-on training during professional television or film shoots taking place throughout Broward County and beyond. Students of The Film Academy will benefit from direct interaction with active industry professionals who serve as mentors, guiding students through conceiving, writing, filming, directing, producing, and editing short films that will be entered into domestic and international film festivals. Projects will be helmed by the students 3. Classes at FLCT Classes are designed to provide formal theatre training and to develop self-esteem, discipline and creativity in children ages 4 to 18 years old. Productions and classes take place at the Fine Arts Theatre on Broward College Central Campus in Davie Florida. Productions provide a forum for youth and adults to create and collaborate during the main stage shows of youth performing for the public, the young repertory productions for teenage actors, and the family productions where parents, children and community leaders can audition to perform together. Outreach Programs serve residents and visitors to Broward, Miami-Dade and Palm Beach Counties who would otherwise be unable to participate in programs due to financial, geographic or cultural constraints. Programs include arts infusion residency programs, festivals for the diverse multicultural South Florida audience, special appearances, family and cultural expos, etc.
