Mission Statement
The Mission of Southern Scholarship Foundation is to help deserving young people who lack financial resources, but demonstrate excellent academic merit and good character, attend institutions of higher education.
About This Cause
Southern Scholarship Foundation’s (SSF) mission has remained the same since its founding 65 years ago— Through rent-free housing and cooperative living, Southern Scholarship Foundation supports students who lack financial resources, demonstrate excellent academic merit, and exemplify good character attend institutions of higher education. SSF residents are provided with rent-free housing and live in a cooperative and diverse living environment, adding to their college experience. Since college students in Florida typically pay more than $15,200 per year for rent, food, and living expenses, this program provides a significant savings to its students. Living in an SSF rent-free scholarship house, these students will only have to pay for food, utilities, cable and internet – usually about $1,000 per semester – thus saving them, and their families, approximately $13,200 annually or $52,800 over a typical four year college career. This Food and Services fee is deposited directly to their house’s Food and Services account allowing each house to operate autonomously. They are, however, required to submit a budget for food, utilities, cable, phone, and internet service to the Directors of Student Affairs and balance this budget each month. Because SSF allowed residents to defer their 2020-2021 scholarship to January, if needed, due to COVID, our houses are only about 80% full for Fall 2020. To ensure that the Food and Services bill stay within reach for our residents, SSF will be subsidizing payments for the house utilities to make up for the residents that deferred to January 2021. Each house additionally elects officers and work together on work job (chore) schedules and cooking schedules and are required to eat together as a family four nights a week. SSF is thrilled that 78% of graduates for the Spring 2020 semester graduated with $0 in student debt! Southern Scholarship Foundation’s rent-free scholarship housing program is designed to not only ensure that bright students who have a serious financial need are able to attend Florida universities, but it is designed to provide these students with the support they need to succeed in school and intangible benefits to help them succeed in life. SSF is proud of its "Education for Life" philosophy and believes it is what sets SSF apart from other scholarship programs and truly helps break the cycle of poverty.
