Mission Statement
Florida Defenders of the Environment works to protect freshwater resources, conserve public lands, and provide quality environmental education.
About This Cause
Since 1969, Florida Defenders of the Environment (FDE) has been long involved in the management and conservation of public lands, protecting fresh water resources, and environmental education: Protecting Freshwater Resources - Efforts to restore more than 16 miles of river, 20 natural springs, and nearly 8,000 acres of biologically diverse hardwood floodplain forests are ongoing since The Cross Florida Barge Canal was officially deauthorized in 1990, Removal of the Kirkpatrick Dam (formerly known as Rodman Dam) and freeing the Ocklawaha River will represent a tremendous victory for the environment, and will provide a lasting legacy for future generations of Floridians. Conservation of Public Lands - FDE helped protect the Osceola National Forest from mining and improved the management of the Ocala National Forest as well as several state parks. FDE played a key role in getting the former barge canal lands to be a designated greenway. Environmental Education - In 2007, Florida Defenders of the Environment announced the completion of Natural Florida: In Word, Image, and Deed, one of the most comprehensive multimedia compilations of artistic works ever produced about focused careers and opportunities. FDE is a non-profit, 501(c)(3) organization, funded through the generosity of individual members, grants, and donations. FDE members are the main source of financial support for the organizations and are essential for FDE’s work in environmental protection and education.
