About This Cause
First Step of Sarasota, Inc. a non-profit, was founded in 1968 as a small, storefront referral operation assisting those with alcohol dependence. As the needs of the community changed, First Step also changed; adding detox, outpatient and residential programs. First Step is licensed by the State of Florida and Accredited by the Commission in the Accreditation of the Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF). Coastal Behavioral Healthcare, Inc. a non-profit behavioral healthcare organization was originally founded in Sarasota in 1971 as Storefront Centers for Counseling; it was established as a result of a citizen-led initiative to meet a growing need in Sarasota for drug and alcohol recovery services. In 1988, the organization changed its name to Coastal Recovery Centers, Inc. to reflect its growth and expansion. A year later, Coastal acquired its first Mental Health Services contract from the Florida Department of Health and Rehabilitative Services (HRS) Alcohol, Drug Abuse and Mental Health (ADM) Program Office. In 2001, sustained growth and development led Coastal Recovery Centers to change its name to Coastal Behavioral Healthcare, Inc. to better reflect the agency’s mission and scope of service. In July 2020, First Step of Sarasota, Inc. and Coastal Behavioral Healthcare, Inc. came together in a strategic unification of resources under the First Step of Sarasota, Inc. brand. The unification will better serve the community and provide more impactful solutions for individuals with mental health and substance use disorders. Together, this combined organization will offer a regional, collaborative approach and as one organization, will ensure a better continuum of care for its clients. In October 2020 First Step’s new logo, mission, vision and core values statement was approved by the Board of Directors. Strategic goals are to increase its behavioral health footprint through expansion of programs, increasing outreach opportunities through specialized services and access to care. The primary priorities will be to focus on prevention, integrated healthcare, expansion of programs, continuum of services into Manatee County, jail diversion, co-locating of the detox unit and the crisis unit, creating a central call system, a behavioral health response team and providing a community-based pathway into a holistic system of behavioral healthcare. First Step has 276 licensed beds and serves Sarasota, Manatee, Charlotte and De Soto Counties. First Step’s positive community partnerships and relationships along with collaborations create a positive impact and enhance the organization’s reputation in the community. First Step is engaged with community stakeholders and anchored with community organizations such as the School Board of Sarasota County, hospitals, law enforcement and other non-profits. Foundations and community leaders are supportive of First Step’s commitment to the communities it serves in providing a standard of excellence and comprehensive continuum of care for those with mental health and substance use disorders. First Step currently has five pilot programs in effect for the years of 2020-2023, they include: Behavioral Health Response Team, Community Offender Rehabilitative Treatment (CORT), Law Enforcement/First Responder Rapid Resolution Therapy, Pregnant Patient Detoxification and Peer to Peer.
