Mission Statement

Dawn of Hope is a nonprofit community organization that provides high quality, caring, individualized services to enrich the lives of adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities in the Northeast Tennessee Region.

About This Cause

Dawn of Hope is dedicated to the care of adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. After age 21, individuals with these types of disabilities are no longer eligible to participate in the Special Needs Program in the public school system. It is then up to the Individual’s parents/ family to take over 24/7 care or to partner with a community agency (like Dawn of Hope) to care for their son or daughter. We provide care for more than 210 individuals through our Developmental, Vocational, Residential and Health Programs. These Programs provide a safe, caring, educational environment that focuses on increasing independence, building confidence, and encouraging community participation. The individuals we serve all strive to lead a happy, healthy, social life in which they can be an active part of their community. At Dawn of Hope we are dedicated to providing all the tools necessary for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities to live a meaningful life. The Developmental Day Program is located at the Stratton Building at 500 East Oakland Avenue in Johnson City. Individuals participate in five class curriculums that rotate on a daily basis, and have numerous opportunities for community involvement. An Active Elderly curriculum is available for individuals who have reached retirement age and prefer a more relaxed pace. These curriculum allow all Service Recipients an opportunity to develop a variety of life & community participation skills, creative arts skills & hobbies, and health & well-being activities - all in a safe, learning environment with their peers. Additionally Dawn of Hope has five areas dedicated to EXCELS (Expanding Communications and Enhancing Living Skills) where the primary focus is on self-help and independent living skills. Individuals are encouraged to participate in community outings in line with their interests including Adventure Book Club, Beck Mountain Hayride, Captain for a Day, and Special Olympics. Social Clubs like the Praise Choir, Ladies League, Horticulture, Drama and Nascar Clubs allow program participants the opportunity to expand their personal interests. More than 95 individuals currently participate in the Developmental Program. Transportation services are provided for community outings. Van service may be available to participate in the Developmental Program.
