Mission Statement
The Ronald McDonald House of Tampa Bay (RMHTB) is a not-for-profit organization that provides a “home-away-from-home” for families with children receiving medical treatment in bay area hospitals. Each year, RMHTB provides 2,000 families a safe and comfortable place to stay within walking distance to their hospitalized child. It is the cornerstone program of the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Tampa Bay which also makes grants to other local not-for-profit organizations that help children in need.
About This Cause
The Ronald McDonald House Charities of Tampa Bay (RMHCTB) provides comfort, care and support to children and their families through the Ronald McDonald House® (RMH). RMH provides a "home-away-from-home" for families with children receiving medical treatment in bay area hospitals. Each year, RMH provides 2,000 families a safe and comfortable place to stay within walking distance to their hospitalized child. Ronald McDonald House Charities of Tampa Bay, Inc. was incorporated on October 31, 1978 in St. Petersburg. Since opening our first RMH in 1980, we have served over 50,000 pediatric families. In March 2010, we opened our newest 14-bedroom house (Central House) within the new All Children's Hospital increasing our total to 80 bedrooms in four Houses (one in Tampa and three in St. Petersburg). Although we request a nominal $10 donation per room-night from families, our cost to house each family is over $100 per room-night. No family is ever turned away for non-contribution of the $10 suggested donation. When a child becomes sick or injured, finding treatment is the most important thing to a parent. They gather all of their energy and resources together to care for their child. What they often do not think about until they arrive at the hospital is where they will stay. Many parents think they can stay by the child's bedside, only to realize that this will be uncomfortable, and in some cases, impossible, if the child is being treated in intensive care. Many of these families' financial burdens are stretched to the limit with medical bills and time off work. Each House has bedrooms with private bathrooms, comfortable common rooms (kitchen, living room, laundry room, family room, play areas, etc.) Our families receive much more than accommodation; they find a safe, supportive, convenient and home-like environment. Staff and volunteers provide crucial emotional support through the difficult time of having a seriously injured or sick child. Volunteers cook hot, nutritious meals so tired families are greeted with a warm home-cooked meal after long hours at the hospital. Families going through similar circumstances can share with each other their hopes and fears as they struggle with the challenges of their children's medical needs. The stories we hear from families constantly echo this theme: They do not know what they would have done if the Ronald McDonald House had not been available for them. No other charity in Tampa Bay provides this service to pediatric families. In addition to overnight stays, our Central House is open during the day to any in-patient family for naps, snacks, showers, respite and relaxation. This facility allows us to care for all families with hospitalized children at All Children's.
