Mission Statement

The mission of SPCA Florida is to eliminate animal suffering and engage the entire community in the welfare and well-being of animals. We provide veterinary services for companion animals, relinquishment intervention to keep pets in homes and programs to adopt healthy animals and to reduce pet overpopulation. Our vision is Healthy Animals/Humane Communities.

About This Cause

SPCA Florida adopts 4,000 dogs and cats annually from our Lakeland Adoption Center and off-site locations. Each of these animals is wormed, vaccinated, sterilized, microchipped, tested for feline leukemia or heartworms, and treated for injury, disease or infection, if necessary. Our Safety Net and Open Paw protocols keep animals in their homes and make shelter animals more adoptable, decreasing significantly the number of animals surrendered and euthanized. Pet owners are offered counseling and assistance with medical and behavioral issues as alternatives to surrender. To reduce pet overpopulation, we operate an animal Medical Center that provides reduced cost spaying and neutering for 14,000 animals annually. 8,000 pet owners bring one or more animals to our Medical Center for sterilization, vaccinations or treatment for illnesses or injuries each year. Our community outreach programs include a Wellness Wagon to provide vaccinations, heartworm testing and wellness services to pets at sites near their homes; a Feral Cat program to spay, neuter and vaccinate 5,000 community cats per year; Ani-meals pet food and veterinary care for pets owned by 100 seniors served by Meals on Wheels and Polk County Elderly Services; additional pet food donations for 140 clients on public assistance; $140,000 in free or deeply discounted medical services for clients who otherwise could not afford a major veterinary expense; Pet Therapy visits to local nursing homes; Canine Good Citizenship and Therapy Dog International Testing; and humane education programs including a summer Critter Camp for students in grades 3 - 8.
