Mission Statement
Motivated and guided by the compassion of Christ, we serve and care for people in need.
About This Cause
The mission of Lutheran Social Services of Northeast Florida (LSS) is “motivated and guided by the compassion of Christ, we serve and care for people in need.” For 35 years, LSS has been living out that mission in the Jacksonville community through a variety of innovative, effective programs. In 1979, a consortium of Lutheran congregations and Jacksonville business and civic leaders came together to form Lutheran Social Services of Northeast Florida to respond to the needs of the community. Initially, the agency focused on hunger issues through the Nourishment Network, a small community food pantry. Over time, that small pantry grew into the largest food bank in the region. In subsequent years, LSS responded to other unmet needs in the community by adding additional programs. Today, in addition to its hunger and nutrition programs, LSS also includes the AIDS Care and Education (ACE), for people in the community living with HIV/AIDS; a representative payee program, which provides daily money management for people who are unable to do so independently; the Sharing Place Thrift Store, which provides low-cost clothing and household items to the community; and the refugee services program, which helps those who have fled their home countries due to persecution resettle in Jacksonville and acclimate to the U.S. In 2014, LSS’ Nourishment Network changed focus, moving from an independent regional food bank to a portfolio of targeted programs addressing food instability and nutrition in the community. Those programs include the Backpack and Health Begins Before Birth (HB3) programs, as well as a food pantry providing direct service to clients. Through the Backpack program, children who qualify for free or reduced lunch at school receive bags of food to take home for the weekend or over school holidays. HB3 takes aim at prenatal and neonatal health, providing nutrition support and intensive case management to expectant mothers at high risk for low birth weight babies.
