Mission Statement
The mission of Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida is: To create hope and nourish lives through a powerful hunger relief network, while multiplying the generosity of a caring community. Our vision is inspiring and engaging our community to end hunger. For over 31 years, Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida has remained faithful in our work to alleviate local hunger. By helping to close the gap between the need for food and the amount of food available, our mission touches hundreds of thousands of lives annually. Second Harvest exists to serve the program needs of our partner agencies providing emergency food assistance. Our partner agencies access perishable and non-perishable food resources through our main facility in Orlando, our Brevard Branch in West Melbourne, and our Volusia Branch in Daytona Beach. Last year, over 59 million pounds of food resources were distributed to over 550 Central Florida nonprofit partner agencies providing food assistance to people in need.
About This Cause
Since 1983, Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida has remained faithful to its mission to fight hunger. By helping to close the gap between our community’s need for donated food and the amount of food available, it is a mission that touches hundreds of thousands of lives each year. In fiscal year 2013-14, nearly 50 million pounds of food resources were distributed to over 550 Central Florida nonprofit partner agencies providing emergency food assistance. Over the past thirty-one years, over 400 million pounds of food resources have reached needy people in Central Florida through the work of the Food Bank. Our partner agencies access food resources through the following programs: General Food Distribution of donated perishable and non-perishable food and grocery items Second Helpings, providing agencies serving onsite meals with food from restaurants, convention centers, theme parks, etc. that has been prepared but not served Community Food Drives, through which non-perishable food is donated by people in the community The Emergency Food Assistance Program (TEFAP), the distribution of USDA government commodities The Kids Cafe Program, which provides after school meals and snacks to at-risk children in low-income neighborhoods The Hi-Five Take Home Food Pack Program, which provides shelf-stable, easy-to-open packs of nutritious food to low-income elementary school students The, Summer Food Service Program, providing at-risk children with meals and snacks during the summer months Disaster Relief, emergency food distribution to agencies serving victims of natural or man-made disasters In addition, our Benefits Connection Outreach Program helps eligible households access the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. The 12-week Second Harvest Culinary Training Program offers unemployed adults job-readiness training for entry-level culinary positions. The Community Kitchen prepares and caters food/beverage service for groups using our Community Room.
