Mission Statement
Seeking to put God's love into action, Habitat for Humanity brings people together to build homes, communities and hope. Our vision is a world where everyone has a decent place to live.
About This Cause
Through shelter, we empower. Habitat for Humanity of Lee and Hendry Counties has 38 years of experience providing affordable homeownership opportunities for local families. Utilizing volunteer labor and donations of money and materials, Habitat builds or rehabilitates homes to sell to low-income earning families with a low to no interest mortgage and monthly payments set at 30% or less of the homeowner's income, making homeownership an affordable reality. Since 1982, we have served more than 1,750 families; of these, 220 homeowners have fully satisfied their Habitat mortgages. Qualified candidates exhibit need, a willingness to partner, and ability to pay an affordable mortgage. All Habitat homeowner candidates earn less than 80% of the area median income and often live in unsafe, overcrowded, or overpriced conditions. Homeowner candidates volunteer 300 sweat equity hours and attend 20+ hours of homeownership classes (including budgeting, home maintenance, and HOA if applicable) and pay $1,700 in closing costs. As a HUD-approved counseling agency, certified homeownership advisors provide counseling services to both Habitat partner families and other community members in need of assistance. Today more than 52,000 households in Lee County spend over half their monthly income on a place to live. For many of these families, excessive housing costs make saving for an emergency impossible and necessities (including quality food, medical care, and reliable transportation) remain out of reach. At Habitat we know that affordable homeownership is the foundation for building strong families and a resilient economy. Habitat’s ability to offer low-income wage earners the opportunity to purchase a safe, decent, affordable home has a long-lasting effect on the whole family. Longitudinal studies show a strong connection between homeownership and financial stability, physical health, emotional well-being, and children’s academic achievement. In fact, children of homeowners are 116% more likely to graduate from high school and attend college compared to children of renters. For adults, homeownership offers an ability to budget for other necessities and plan for bigger goals, such as higher education, professional advancement, and retirement.
