Mission Statement
Our mission is to provide solutions to community challenges by engaging volunteers aged 55+.
About This Cause
Engaging volunteers is our specialty. We help disadvantaged children, frail elders, overwhelmed caregivers, adults with disabilities, struggling veterans, hungry families, and more. Our volunteers also benefit from staying active and purposeful. We engage 1500+ volunteers annually in collaboration with 150+ community partners to help 8000+ underserved individuals. During 40+ years of service, we have provided over 5 million hours of community assistance with a fair market value exceeding $131.6 million. We are a fiscally conscious, financially stable nonprofit recognized for our track record of successful outcomes. Our recent Independent Audit shows over 94% of each dollar goes to program services. Our Classroom Grandparents are highly-trained senior-aged volunteers who provide one-on-one tutoring for struggling students in low-income, high-need schools. "Before 3rd-grade children learn to read; after 3rd grade they read to learn." Reading on grade level by 3rd grade is a significant predictor of high school graduation. Classroom Grandparents provide the individual attention overwhelmed students need to achieve success in the classroom and beyond. Operation: Veteran Connect mobilizes volunteers who are also Veterans or military family members to help their fellow Veterans, active military members, and their families access resources for improved mental and physical health. Hundreds of Veterans in our community are struggling but are too proud to speak up. Military service creates a unique bond of camaraderie and trust. Volunteers learn to "speak the language" of service, so Veterans can feel comfortable discussing sensitive topics like mental health, financial difficulties, service-related injuries, and obtaining benefits. Senior Companion volunteers provide in-person companionship and telephone reassurance for isolated seniors who are at a high risk of loneliness. Through regularly scheduled visits, friendly conversation, and mentally stimulating activities, volunteers help clients preserve their mental health and independence. Loneliness can have devastating health consequences, eclipsing obesity and smoking for premature decline/death. Social connection is the cure. Health Buddies provide "companionship as medicine" to help isolated seniors living with chronic conditions reduce anxiety through improved health knowledge, empowering them to self-manage their overall wellness. We recruit volunteers aged 55 and older to help other nonprofits increase their capacity to serve the community. Our volunteers benefit from staying active and purposeful while providing food security for hungry families, being a friend to an isolated elder, mentoring a child, and more.
