Mission Statement

Big Brothers Big Sisters' empower every kid to graduate with a plan for their future and a mentor whose impact last a lifetime. Our mission is to “Create and support one-to-one mentoring relationships that ignite the power and promise of youth.” Youth and parents are embracing the “Bigs” as an extended support system during this pandemic. Positive mentoring relationships have a direct and measurable impact on children’s lives. Nationally, youth who participate in Big Brothers Big Sisters programs are more confident in their schoolwork performance, able to get along better with their families, 46% less likely to begin using illegal drugs 27% less likely to begin using alcohol, and 52% less likely to skip school. Locally, Big Brothers Big Sisters served 562 youth last year with similar positive outcomes.

About This Cause

Since 1986, Big Brothers Big Sisters has provided mentors to children in Martin County. In 2010, the Martin County agency expanded into Palm Beach County, creating an overall territory of over 2,000 square miles and a population of over 1.5 million residents. Big Brothers Big Sisters is proud of its accomplishments, collaborations, and awards over the past thirty years and seeks to continue to strive for excellence. * 2007 Top 35 of Big Brothers Big Sisters Agencies Nationwide * Again in 2009, 2010, 2011 Top 35 Big Brothers Big Sisters Agencies Nationwide * 2007 CEO, William P. Bee, Jr., Top Agency CEO * Business Leader Magazine: Top 100 small businesses in South Florida. * 2008, 2009 and 2011 Martin County's Best Places to Work * 2013 Awarded from the City of WPB for Dedication to the Children of PBC * 2015 Sun Sentinel Doyle Award for Nonprofit Excellence * 2015, American Institutes for Research National Mentoring Site. * 2017, School to Work launched in Palm Beach County, designed by a Business Committee * 2017, Mentoring Children of Incarcerated Parents offered as Community Based Program * 2018, School to Work expanded, doubling attendance for 2018/19 * 2019 School to Work Expands into Martin County to serve 88 youth across Martin and Palm Beach. * 2020, Big Brothers Big Sister mission remains intact. The agency successfully converts all programs to digital methods The agency developed practices, and policies for monitoring digital mentoring, and safety protocol for social distancing and online interactions, in addition to typical child safety questions. * 2020, Funded through the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the agency collaborates in research of virtual mentoring with ICouldBe and John's Hopkins University. The staff and Board of Directors are a caring, motivated group who are dedicated to the mission and vision of helping kids achieve their potential. Big Brothers Big Sisters staff are background screened and trained in prior to implementing programs. They are expertly trained in utilizing Big Brothers Big Sisters of America courses, Service Delivery Model framework, and best practices all developed by numerous child safety experts and evidence-based research. Program staff must have a minimum of a bachelor degree to qualify for positions that have direct contact with youth.
