About This Cause
Communities In Schools is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization (EIN #59-3027895) serving children in Duval County. The mission of Communities In Schools (CIS) is to surround students with a community of support empowering them to stay in school and achieve in life. Currently, CIS serves over 5,700 students in 37 elementary, middle and high Duval County Public Schools. The staff is dedicated to helping at-risk students stay in school, graduate, and be successful in life. CIS works together with school administration, teachers and parents to keep students successfully in school. CIS staff works with students through case management, literacy tutoring and afterschool programs: • Case Management – Each full-time site coordinator works with an average of 75 students in the elementary, middle and high schools throughout Duval County Public Schools who are at risk of falling behind or dropping out. Workforce development initiatives support high school students in the after school hours and during summer. • Literacy - Duval Reads provides intensive one-on-one and small group literacy tutoring for students in elementary school who are reading one or more grade levels below their class. • Afterschool - Students find a safe environment once the bell rings and get help with academics with certified teachers and can participate in enrichment activities like sports, learning symphony instruments and robotics. The goal of CIS’s Afterschool Program is to provide disadvantaged children access to family-driven and youth-guided afterschool programs that are safe, supportive, engaging, active linked with in-school learning and effective in supporting the development of knowledge, skills and dispositions needed to thrive in school, the workplace and life.
