Mission Statement
To improve the overall health status of Marion County residents by providing quality primary medical, dental, and mental health services to all residents, but in particular to those residents who would not otherwise be able to access the services due to financial limitation and/or lack of health insurance.
About This Cause
The Heart of Florida Health Center (HFHC) is a non-profit, 501©3 organization that has been providing compassionate, family-centered primary care services to low-income residents of Marion County, Florida for 29 years. Opening as a free walk-in clinic in 1991 named Community Health Services, the center was rebranded Heart of Florida Health Center after becoming a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) in 2009. HFHC is the largest primary care provider for the targeted population: residents of all ages with incomes at or below 200% of the federal poverty level, living in the county. FQHCs are community-based health care providers that receive funds from HRSA (Health Resources & Services Administration) Health Center Program to provide primary care services to underserved area. To be an FQHC, HFHC must meet a stringent set of requirements that include quality and financial measures. HFHC is the medical and dental home for over 25,000 patients from ethnically and racially diverse backgrounds. Over 90% of patients seen at HFHC are at or below 200 percent of the federal poverty level and 34% are without any form of insurance. Clinical services include adult and pediatric primary care, women’s health, maternity, well child care, pediatric dental, adult dental, mental health and substance use services, case management, low-cost pharmacy and radiology. Most private insurance, Medicaid and Medicare accepted. A sliding fee scale payment schedule is offered for uninsured patients and patients with share of cost Medicaid. From one site and a staff of 17 in 2009, HFHC has grown to eight sites and a staff of 167 in 2021 increasing access to care and overcoming barriers to care faced by Marion County residents in some of the more rural and distant areas of the county.
