Offering opportunities for self-improvement, education, job skills and enhancing life for individuals and families; thus affecting change for the community.

About This Cause

The United Food Bank & Services of Plant City (UFB) serves East Hillsborough County (Florida). This area has a 45% ALICE population and 15.5% are below the federal poverty rate. In the past 5 years, UFB has gone from serving 1,500 people each month to over 10,000 people each month! There is so much need in East Hillsborough County positioned directly between Tampa and Orlando. The goal of our organization, simply stated, is this: We offer food assistance and related supporting services (clothing and hygiene items, educational programs, health screenings, flu shots and much more) to those facing food insecurity in our community that fall into the "Emergency Food Assistance" or "Last Resort" programs. Our program offers food 5 days a week to all eligible clients. Our meals are balanced USDA approved meals including fresh fruit and vegetables, breads, meats, canned items and boxed items. To accurately assess our clients, we have an intake procedure where we screen our clients for additional services they need to sustain daily life. We screen for services such as rent assistance, drug abuse assistance, grief counseling, job search, child abuse issues, clothing and transportation requirements and the overall well-being of all children. Our goal is to offer more than groceries; in efforts of moving them to long term success. Programs offered: 1. Feeding our Future. This is our Children’s Nutritional Outreach program and is designed to meet the needs of the many children facing food insecurity in Eastern Hillsborough County. It has been proven that children that are hungry struggle with learning and behaving in their adolescence which can prohibit them from becoming productive citizens in our society. The Break Bags are distributed during non-school time such as summer, winter break, and Thanksgiving. In the 2022-2023 school year, our impact was doubled and we distributed 1,000 bags every week. The Weekend Backpacks is a partnership with schools in which we work closely with the school social workers. This ensures that the children that are most in need receive weekend food. The College Hunger Program is a partnership with Hillsborough Community College providing key staples to students including food and hygiene items. 2. Feeding our Legacy. This senior focused program was launched and born out of the pandemic. Many seniors live alone on fixed incomes, without transportation or a support network. This program allows them to have healthy meals on a regular basis. 3. Pink Pantry. This pantry provides feminine products to females on an as needed basis. 4. Diaper Pantry. Since many of our clients are families with children, this program has proven to be invaluable to them. It also helps lessen the stress of financial burdens. Diapers cannot be purchased with food stamps and prices have soared. The UFB's continued goal of meeting our community members that face food insecurity is by having nutritional food products (fresh produce and nutrient-dense proteins) available to all by informing the community way of, the community public notices, flyers, social media, public speaking efforts, Cultural Community Centers, business meetings and programs, and through our relationships with the local state representatives.
