Mission Statement

Educating deaf, hard of hearing and blind, visually impaired children from preschool through 12th grade, including academics, athletics, arts, and independent living skills, FSDB serves nearly 1,000 students from across Florida.

About This Cause

Florida School for the Deaf and the Blind (FSDB) is a fully accredited state public school and outreach center available tuition-free to eligible pre-K and K-12 deaf/hard of hearing and blind/visually impaired students. Comprehensive educational services at FSDB are individualized, specific to the unique communication and accessibility needs of each student for independence and lifelong success. The Board of Trustees for The Florida School for the Deaf and the Blind Endowment Fund preserves private donations for their intended use and maintains separation from state funds. FSDB provides very specialized education to sensory impaired students. Our teachers are specially trained and dually credentialed. FSDB receives funds through the Florida Department of Education. Unlike other public school districts, FSDB does not receive local tax dollars from property assessments or lottery dollars. Private funds, received through the Board of Trustees – Florida School for the Deaf and the Blind, are vital for the school as state funds are not available for playgrounds, recreation, athletics, performing arts, student recognition, field trips, and financial assistance for needy students. FSDB receives nominal state funding for adaptive technology, library resources, summer programs, tutoring, parent outreach and classroom enrichment materials. Private contributions support these important services as well. Our beneficiary population was 979 children as of December 2015: • 616 students on our St. Augustine campus; 400 students live on our 80 acre campus Sunday – Thursday, traveling to their homes across Florida each Friday and returning to campus on Sunday. Our 216 ‘day’ students, travel via yellow school bus to and from their homes each school day. • 363 infants/toddlers in our Parent Advisors program; program trains and provides in-home, early intervention advisors, who work with the family and child to build language competence and school readiness of sensory impaired children.
