About This Cause
Brooks Clubhouse is a community-based program that exists to advance the continuum of care for adults living with an acquired brain injury (ABI). The mission of the Clubhouse is to enhance cognitive, physical, social and emotional recovery, as well as to improve quality of life and potential to lead a productive and meaningful life. The Brooks Clubhouse serves as bridge from traditional outpatient medical rehabilitation therapies to community and vocational reintegration. The Clubhouse program is open daily from 9:00 – 3:00; it is operated by professional staff in conjunction with program members and volunteers. It allows for individuals who might otherwise be sitting home, with limited participation in life, to make a valuable contribution to the daily program operations by assisting in one of three primary work units (Culinary, Business Office and Maintenance). Additionally, Clubhouse members can choose to engage in a number of functional therapeutic activities offered such as life skills classes, adaptive aquatics, adaptive Zumba, community outings, game playing with a cognitive purpose, socialization, academic and computer skills enhancement activities. The program follows the standards defined by the International Brain Injury Clubhouse Alliance (IBICA) which requires that the Clubhouse offers a safe environment that focuses on abilities rather than disabilities and mandates that all people are treated with dignity and respect. A set of 33 Clubhouse standards has been developed and endorsed by IBICA that govern the operation, services, and purpose of all ABI clubhouses.
