Mission Statement
The “NS"SF & Project GRADY-RAYAM The “Negro Spiritual” Scholarship Foundation is a Central Florida nonprofit established in 1996. The network of programs and services through which we impact the public is known as Project GRADY-RAYAM. Our agency’s threefold mission is to preserve America’s Negro spiritual songs from the slave era as part of the nation’s cultural heritage, provide training, development and scholastic assistance grants for young artists, and inspire the American public to embrace spirituals as a shared cultural legacy using workshops, lectures and recitals promoting America's Negro spiritual song tradition from the slave era. The GRADY-RAYAM PRIZE in Vocal Performance Competition and the CARL MAULTSBY PRIZE in Piano Peformance offer young artists a chance to earn scholastic assistance grants, along with performance-readiness training and concert stage exposure.
About This Cause
The 2018 Case For “NS”SF & Project GRADY-RAYAM What: The “Negro Spiritual” Scholarship Foundation is an established nonprofit based in Orlando Florida. Our twofold mission is to preserve America’s Negro spiritual songs from the slave era as part of our cultural heritage, and use this music to provide training, development and scholastic assistance grants for high school students in Florida and collegians nationwide who excel as performing artists. The network of programs and services through which we impact the public is known as Project GRADY-RAYAM (www.gradyrayam.org). Who: Our Foundation is efficiently staffed out of an Orlando office by two full-time employee – Damon Dandridge (Management Director) and Rudolph Cleare (Development Director) along with contract hires and a volunteers corps. We are governed by a volunteer Board of Directors. Impact: Our agency dedicates itself to making a difference in ways that are meaningful and highly effective. Over our lifetime, we’ve worked directly with more than fifty thousand senior high school students, collegians, parents, educators or music professionals as clients. We created the GRADY-RAYAM PRIZE in Sacred Music, a unique competition program that identifies and promotes pre-professional classical singers of all ethnic and racial backgrounds. Our DR. CARL MAULTSBY PRIZE does the same for emerging keyboard artists. We’ve already awarded $347,500 in tuition assistance starter grants to help 94 deserving young people achieve success in college. We work collaboratively with schools, churches, performing arts groups, and cultural or civic organizations to extend the rich legacy of the Negro spiritual through outreach in the form of workshops, lectures and recitals. We produce an annual season of music concerts that stimulate and inspire the wider community. We commission scholars and musicians to produce new works, hire professional singers and players in support of the American cultural community, and share our resources and expertise with others nationwide. Audience: “NS”SF has been lauded repeatedly for the broad scope of our appeal as well as our ability to attract people of diverse backgrounds and interests to the cause. Our staff, board, patrons, benefactors, awardees and event attendees are a tapestry of social, ethnic and economic strata. The music we preserve, the manner in which we present programs, and the quality of character shown by the many young people who are our ambassadors all reflect a concern for inclusion, and a high regard for the dignity of the human person. Base of Support: The viability of an organization such as ours hinges upon VISIBILITY, CREDIBILITY and FUNDING: elements that make us effective and keep us strong. We constantly promote the “N”SF and our Project GRADY-RAYAM brand for a growing national audience. We hire staff and recruit persons for service on our Board of Directors whose talents and abilities provide leadership, governance and oversight. And we make use of sound practices and the expertise of a qualified professional to coordinate efforts for raising the money needed to directly underwrite service programs and offset operating costs. All of it contributes to our SUCCESS.
