Mission Statement
Academy Prep Center of Tampa is a private, non-profit middle school, serving students in grades 5 thru 8. Our mission is “to inspire and empower students qualifying for need-based scholarships to be future community leaders through a rigorous middle school program coupled with ongoing graduate support.” The goal of Academy Prep is to see these students, who live in neighborhoods where less than 45% of adults hold a high school diploma, graduate from high school and college, and become leaders in their communities.
About This Cause
Academy Prep Center of Tampa is a tuition-free, independent center for education for middle-school aged children who qualify for need-based scholarships. In the atmosphere of an extended family, Academy Prep encourages and teaches students to excel in academics, ethical and moral understanding and judgment, and life skills. The school is dedicated to educating economically-disadvantaged students by providing an academically challenging, enriching and structured environment followed by eight years of support and guidance through high school and college. Academy Prep admits students who demonstrate the ability to handle a rigorous and demanding academic program designed to prepare them for success in secondary school and college. Through its year-round program, the school promotes the intellectual, athletic, and social development of its students. Academy Prep students and graduates are expected to act as mature and responsible individuals who contribute to their communities and demonstrate charity and concern in all their actions. Students attend Academy Prep up to 11 hours a day, 6 days a week, 11 months a year, with classes of no more than 18 students, separated by gender. Academy Prep delivers a unique combination of demanding academics and enrichment activities that offer opportunities for growth, including English, math, science, history, poetry, golf, chess, band, choir, dance, sewing, gardening, and community service. Family involvement is an essential component in student achievement—up to 40 hours of volunteer service per family is required annually. Community partnerships provide positive role models in the classroom and facilitate enrichment activities that connect our students to our dynamic and diverse community. Intensive graduate guidance and activities support students throughout their high school and college enrollments. Results that Matter Academy Prep students show significant improvement in academic ability through their Academy Prep years. Most enter at or less than grade level in math and reading: by graduation, 8th graders are scoring 2-4 grade levels ahead in math and reading on national assessment tests. 97% of Academy Prep Alumni graduate from high school on time. Approximately 82% of our graduates have gone on to post-secondary education, and 10% are serving in the armed forces.
