About This Cause

Labrador Retriever Rescue of Florida (LRROF) is a non-profit organization dedicated to placing Labrador Retrievers in loving, permanent homes. Our organization is comprised of hardworking volunteers and veterinarian partners that are committed to placing Labradors in new homes. LRROF started in 2000 as a grassroots organization and has pioneered the talents and techniques of its volunteer base to become one of the most successful dedicated breed rescues in the State of Florida. LRROF provides foster care, veterinary care, spaying/neutering and microchips for the Labradors in our adoption program. Our goal is to place our Labradors in appropriate, permanent homes. Prior to an adoption, we consider the history, temperament, personality, and energy level of the rescued Labrador. The placement process includes a written application and a home visit of the potential adopter. LRROF is committed to making a lifelong match for of all our adopted Labradors. Since 2000, we have rescued and placed over 9,000 dogs to loving homes. Many of our dogs come to us in need of medical attention and the average cost to rehabilitate them in 2016 was $655 per dog. We keep our adoption fees very low (as little as $150 for our senior dogs) by raising money through various events including meet/greets, crowd rise solicitation, bowling, yard sales, wine and craft beer tasting events, annual calendar contest, basket raffles, and sale of merchandise throughout the year. LRROF conducts fund-raisers for specific dogs with significant medical problems and high vet expenses on social media and through the LRROF website. None of our volunteers are paid for their efforts and we have no paid members on our board. The proceeds from these events offset the medical care of our rescues and some incidental administrative costs (i.e. webpage, insurance, postage). We have come a long way since we treated out first heartworm positive dog in 2001 for the cost of $125. At the time we had only $800 in the bank but went ahead with the treatment. Our second major expense was shortly afterwards for a dog that was hit by a car and had multiple fractures that ran well over $1000 after significant discounts from the vet performing the surgery. We continue this trend today – doing the best we can for the dogs in our care and saving them one dog at a time
