Mission Statement

Connecting People with Nature

About This Cause

Bernheim Arboretum and Research Forest’s mission, Connecting People with Nature, was the inspiration that compelled Isaac W. Bernheim to purchase over 12,500 acres of eroded and heavily logged land in Bullitt and Nelson Counties in Kentucky in 1929. He established the I.W. Bernheim Foundation in 1929 to ensure the long-term protection and management of his living legacy. Bernheim’s gift of land became a place where all people could find peace, understanding, and common interest in nature, regardless of race, creed or economic status. Today, Bernheim Arboretum and Research Forest encompasses 15,625 acres and is the largest contiguous forest in the eastern United States. Every generation can participate in life-long learning experiences supporting a deep appreciation of nature through our programming and events. Bernheim Arboretum and Research Forest’s vision is to become “a nationally treasured leader in ecological stewardship that inspires the exploration of our deep connections with nature.” Framed by this vision, Bernheim Forest’s initiatives strategically address how we approach our work, whether conservation, horticulture, education, play, art or outdoor recreation, through four Big Ideas – Thought Leadership, Actions Beyond our Borders, Leadership in Ecological Stewardship, and Exploring Deep Connections with Nature. Bernheim Forest is a desired collaborative partner and focuses on building unique partnerships to leverage collective impact and bring innovative approaches to project development and management. Since establishing these four big ideas, Bernheim Forest has been a sought-after collaborative partner in designing and creating deep connections with nature. Bernheim Forest is actively involved in the design, planning and maintenance of living roofs on the American Life Building and the newly constructed University of Louisville Novak Center for Children’s Health in downtown Louisville as well as native other landscapes in the urban environment. Bernheim Forest is working on a regional scale to establish wildlife corridors and greenways that protect large portions of the region, including our 954-acre pollinator corridor on the Big Level, and we continue to lead and partner with others in scientific investigations aimed at understanding ways to live in harmony with nature. Bernheim Forest is a catalyst in helping drive thinking beyond sustainability strategies toward regenerative design concepts. Admission to the arboretum and forest is free every day for members and every week day for non-members. Non-members incur a $5 environmental impact fee per car on the weekends. Isaac W. Bernheim’s legacy is open to the public every day of the year, except Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day and New Year’s Day, from 7 a.m. until sunset. Bernheim Forest provides nature-based education and outreach to over 9,000 students and families annually and hosts over 270,000 visitors every year.
