About This Cause
Changing Lives… One Dance at a Time Founded in 1982 as a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization, Owensboro Dance Theatre (ODT) is committed to enriching lives through the art of dance. With a mission centered on “changing lives… one dance at a time,” ODT upholds four core values in all its programming: Exceptional Quality Without Compromise – Delivering professional-level performances and instruction. Education for All – Providing accessible dance education for individuals of all ages and backgrounds. Innovative Programs for a Diverse Community – Creating unique opportunities for artistic and personal growth. Emphasizing Health & Wellness – Promoting physical and mental well-being through movement. Transforming the Community Through Dance- Each year, ODT reaches over 25,000 individuals across sixteen counties in the Tri-State area. The organization presents three major productions, featuring world-class guest artists, pre-professional company dancers, and more than 200 community performers. Two of these productions include 4-5 dedicated school performances, offering students an inspiring introduction to the performing arts. Beyond the stage, ODT extends its impact through multiple outreach programs designed to provide arts education and dance experiences to underserved members of the community. The organization’s Triple A (Arts Access for All) initiative ensures that dance is accessible to individuals of all ages, abilities, and economic backgrounds—completely free of charge. ODT’s pre-professional company of 44 dancers are a select group of dedicated dancers who commit extensive time and training to honing their artistry at a pre-professional level. These individuals focus on performance excellence, technical mastery, and artistic growth through rigorous rehearsals, professional guest artist collaborations, and diverse stage experiences. Their participation in ODT’s productions and outreach programs reflects a deep commitment to dance as both an art form and a means of community engagement, preparing them for future opportunities in professional dance, higher education, and beyond. Dance as a Tool for Education & Wellness- ODT’s Community Engagement programs integrate dance with health and wellness education, reaching over 17,000 students annually in more than 40 schools and community centers. Programs include: Dance/Movement/L.E.A.N. – A unique initiative combining dance with essential nutrition and wellness education. Rising Stars: Adaptive Needs Dance Therapy – A specialized program designed for individuals with disabilities, enhancing cognitive, motor, and social development. Dance Ambassadors – Engaging students with professional dancers through lecture-demonstrations and interactive sessions. Dance for Health- provides specialized dance classes for individuals with Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s, using movement to improve mobility, balance, and overall well-being. Through rhythmic exercises and guided dance, participants experience the joy of movement in a supportive and engaging environment. Scholarship & Accessibility Programs – Offering free tickets and transportation to ensure financial barriers never prevent participation in the arts. Expanding the Reach of Dance- ODT operates out of Johnson’s Dance Studio, where rehearsals, master classes, and community engagement events take place. The organization also partners with RiverPark Center, utilizing its state-of-the-art facilities for performances, workshops, and student programs. In the past year alone, ODT has impacted over 25,000 individuals through its productions and outreach efforts. As school budgets for arts education continue to decline, ODT is actively seeking additional funding to expand its programs, ensuring that dance remains an accessible and transformative experience for all. Through the power of movement, Owensboro Dance Theatre nurtures creativity, fosters inclusivity, and promotes lifelong health and wellness—one dancer at a time.
