Incorporating the various genres of dance, Owensboro Dance Theatre, Inc. provides quality dance education and quality dance performances to the Tri-State area. Owensboro Dance Theatre seeks to educate and expand the communities’ knowledge and appreciation of dance as an art form.” In tandem with its mission, Owensboro Dance Theatre (ODT) provides education for communities in regards to the health and lifestyle benefits dance promotes. ODT improves the health and wellness of the community through expanding programs such as Dance/Movement/L.E.A.N. (D/M/L), Triple A (Arts Access for All), and “Rising Stars: Special Needs Dance Therapy.

About This Cause

Owensboro Dance Theatre, Inc. (ODT) presents a broad range of programs and services for the regional community. ODT brings more than sixteen performances to the public through productions with renowned professional guest artists along with many events focused on outreach and development in the community. . In addition to its three concert productions, ODT performs at community events reaching over 20,000 individuals in twelve counties in Kentucky and two in Indiana. ODT directs emphasis on its “Teaching in Outreach” programs, provided cost-free throughout the Tri-State area, encouraging healthy lifestyles through dance, health, and wellness education. In the past year, ODT’s “Teaching in Outreach” programs reached more than 17,000 students in over 40 Tri-State schools and community centers, teaching the art of dance while using L.E.A.N nutrition guidelines and materials to provide the tools needed to gain and maintain a healthy lifestyle. ODT’s education outreach programs, reaching over 17,000 students last year, include: • Teaching in Outreach- This program runs throughout the school year (August 2014-June 2015) ODT teaching artists provide Daviess County, Owensboro City, and other regional school systems with the experience of dance as well as education in nutrition and fitness. This program runs features specialized programs such as Dance/Movement/L.E.A.N. and “Rising Stars: Special Needs Dance Therapy”. • Dance/Movement/L.E.A.N. (D/M/L) – This program operates throughout the school year (August 2014- June 2015). This program includes a unique addition to ODT’s Teaching in Outreach programs by including pertinent nutrition and wellness information with dance education. With ODT certified L.E.A.N. teaching artist Kim Johnson implementing tools developed by Dr. William Sears, students, educators, and families are provided the tools for a healthy lifestyle through dance classes, health and wellness lectures, and hands-on nutrition education. This program is offered in many Tri-State schools as well as specific community events such as D/M/L Day Camps, free of charge to participants. • Rising Stars: Special Needs Dance Therapy- A free program provided year round and offered to Owensboro Middle and High Schools as well as the Wendell Foster Center, with partnerships in development with Puzzle Pieces and Henderson County Schools. Dance therapy promotes cognitive, motor, and social development, along with a positive effect on health. ODT is uniquely qualified to provide a program for individuals with special needs through Shauna Dever-Jones, an ODT teaching artist certified in Laban/Bartenieff movement analysis. The “Rising Stars” program is the most qualified special needs dance therapy program in Kentucky. This program is designed specifically for individuals with special needs using inventive movements and specialized equipment, bringing the physical and mental benefits of dance to those who need it most. • Dance Ambassadors- Offered during the school year, with lecture/demonstration opportunities provided during the time of each ODT production (August 2014- June 2015). Through this program, ODT enables students to attend one on one question/answer and lecture demonstrations with professional guest artists, free of charge. The students are provided the opportunity to receive an in-depth glance into the life of a dancer and gives those with an interest in dance the chance to explore a future in the art. • Triple A (Arts Access for All) – Offered throughout the school year and dedicated to providing scholarships at the times of ODT productions (August 2014- June 2015). A program developed to provide dance education and enjoyment free of charge to those who would otherwise not be afforded the opportunity. With scholarships for performances as well as scholarships for transportation to the performances, ODT values the opportunity to share its love for dance with the community. ODT believes that finances should never withhold the joy of dance from any individual. • Arts in the AM- This program takes place from August 2014 through May 2015. ODT partners with RiverPark Center to bring dance education and classes to students K-12th grade. • Arts Partners- The program runs from August 2014 through May 2015. ODT teaching artists bring dance education and classes to students in Daviess County Public Schools grades K-12. • Minority Initiative Program- This program operates throughout the school year (August 2014- June 2015). ODT teaching artists and guest professionals bring the art of dance and its universal language through movement to the minority in the community. The program is aimed at providing those afforded little opportunity for physical fitness and art education the chance to attend dance classes, lecture demonstrations, and personal question/answer sessions free of charge. This program reaches students in both Daviess County and Owensboro Public Schools, as well as individuals of community minority programs such as the Burmese community. • Dance & Health on 101 Daviess Street- A one-day event to be presented on April 23, 2015 providing free dance fitness classes, health screenings, and health education. The program promotes fitness and wellness through dance and increases women’s access to health care, prevention, and treatment. • Curriculum Dance Classes- This program runs throughout the school year (August 2014- June 2015). Classes taught by an ODT teaching artists at OMS North and South Campus, Owensboro Elementary schools, and Owensboro High School throughout the school year. At OHS, ODT provides two levels of dance education, to ensure the student’s development and knowledge in dance. • Master Classes- These classes are presented year round by renowned professional artists brought into Owensboro by ODT and open to the public. Participants travel from Bowling Green, Lexington, and Evansville to attend these classes with Owensboro students. The guest artists travel from around the country and instruct various dance forms with focus on cultural diversity and continued dance education. In the past 12 months, Owensboro Dance Theatre (ODT) has reached 31,567 individuals through all productions and outreach activities. Due to Federal, State, and local government cuts to area school funding, ODT is aggressively seeking more funding and donations from various sources due continue bringing the art of dance to a large number of individuals. In an effort to reach students directly affected by government financial cuts, ODT is striving to increase the effect of its Triple A, Dance/Movement/L.E.A.N., and Rising Stars: Special Needs Dance Therapy programs. Each of these programs ensure a student’s opportunity to participate in the arts and gain valuable education through their involvement. These programs also provide continuing opportunities for other individuals in the community including minority community members, senior citizens, and those with special needs. Additional revenue is continuously and aggressively being sought from new sponsors to ensure the aforementioned programs can continue to bring this art to the lives of those in the community otherwise unable to enjoy the beauty and joy of dance. Increased funding will allow Owensboro Dance Theatre (ODT) to continue our mission of providing quality dance education and performance to our community. ODT’s Teaching in Outreach, Dance Ambassadors, Triple A (Arts Access for All), Dance/Movement/L.E.A.N., and Rising Stars: Special Needs Dance Therapy programs provide dance and nutrition educational opportunities to those disadvantaged students and adults interested in dance. ODT strives to promote a healthy future for all community members by encouraging participation in dance and other fitness activities. Increasing the knowledge and interest in the art of dance in the community allows ODT to provide individuals with information and tools needed to develop a healthy lifestyle, and, in return, fight the current epidemics of childhood obesity, heart disease, and diabetes. An increase in funding for all described programs allows ODT to reach more disadvantaged students and adults in the community so that one day dance and its benefits may be experienced by all.
